Hi All, I have a 2004 C220Cdi and the engine management light came on when I took it for inspection was told it was the particualte filter and he informed me that perhaps a good run in the car would clear it. The system was reset and I gave it a 600 mile round trip. The light never came back on but today some 3 weeks after the run it's back on. The mechanic said I would ...
When your mechanic said take it for a good run I think he really wanted you to drive the car in a lower gear and rev the engine hard. Did you do this? I would be interested to know the mileage the car has to. A DPF is a no maintenance high mileage item, well so they say.
May have to get the light reset and give the car a good blast down the motorway this will generate the necessary heat to ...
As GeorgeA, what mileage has the car done?
Malc, what would happen if you binned the DPF and recoded to say no longer there? (assuming possible with Star)
Would there be anything else that would have to be changed?
(Anticipating this issue with mine one day)

Thats low mileage and I do not think the DPF has failed and needs replacement.
There is evidence that cars fitted with a DPF that do lots of short journeys never reach the ...
The DPF burn out process at the main dealer poss not available, while i worked there for some reason they kept taking this option away from the star machine< poss to do with the fact some people were doing a clean out process in work shops where other people could be at risk with the fumes?
Also because of the fire hazard due to the very high temperatures that the DPF gets up to.
card108 - I sympathise having had DPF problems myself.
The mileage is very low for a 2004 car and suggests short jorneys if it's used daily.
Note that the first DPF condition check isn't even required until 50,000 miles! It is indeed a high mileage item provided the car is...

There is evidence that cars fitted with a DPF that do lots of short journeys never reach the operating temperature required to allow the DPF to burn off the built up soot. Are most of your journeys short? I also had fault codes...
I am learning to love the car again and do enjoy the drive but I'm not truly confident that it's all working 100% as it should. I can live with it as it is though. I've run 3 tankfuls through since the fix and all seems well. I'm getting a couple of mpg more than before. Funny thing is that since the Re-flash, the fuel computer is more optimistic than it was before - reporting 4.1 mpg more than calculated rather than the...

I don't know about Merc's with DPF, but on Volkswagens (again my fleet managment side) thrashing them would actually clog the DPF up even more, the correct way to clean a VW DPF was to drive for a long time at around 2000rpm (60mph on the motorway on a 5 speed manual) which is where the correct exhaust gas temperatures to regenerate were obtained.
