Thread: Brown Bess Bayonet Identification

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Uncle Paul
Have a Brown Bess bayonet masked Osborn in script...not block letters. Also has a crown over 27 and the bending test mark. Unit marked L over 14...14th regiment(?). Wonder if this original or a knock off. If original, when was it made? I can't find any marking like this on the web...so far. Thanks Uncle Paul

Osborn in script is correct. The crown over inspectors number is a Tower mark, there are examples with numbers higher than 27, so that is okay. If original your socket will date between 1796 - 1808, after which it was Osborn & Gunby. Reference "British & Commonwealth Bayonets" by Skennerton & Richardson, pp. 56, 57. The reference also includes a photo of Osborn in italics & an X below that. ...

What would 'Extra Service' actually mean?

Bill Curtisra replied 1 month, 1 week ago

They were a way of overcoming production difficulties in the making of the New Pattern Musket 1842 which was suffering from the makers having difficulties ...

Adrian I think I figured out how to add pictures. Uncle Paul

I see that you have, well done. It all looks original to me & in nice condition. I believe that the engraved L over 14 is a generic rack number & does not refer to any unit. A.Roads
