Thread: Broadband dropping - fault with PC? :: Home Networking, Internet Connection

Hi there, I just found this forum and hope you can help me.
(I also hope this is the correct forum to post in - there are so many that look like they might be the one to use...)
I have my desktop connected to Pipex broadband via a Netgear dg834v4 router/modem.
My connection has always been reliable but often very slow (my connection speed is only half a meg anyway, but is ...
It would be useful if you could post your router stats. See http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php
Also look at http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php
Is this any good...?
It looks a mess to me!
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 97155 108436 0 1535 4338 02:06:28
LAN 10M/100M 107037 98324 0 4623 1962 02:06:53
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 576 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 62.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 19.3 db 20.0 db
That indicates that you are on a fixed speed 512kbps connection (the connection speeds 576 down 288 up). The noise margin indicates that your line might reach 1000kbps on Max ADSL. See http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx
It doesn't help with why your connection should go up and down on your desktop. I'd check for a new driver for your network card and would suspect either a...
go to Start menu in XP and put 'cmd' in the Run Box, a black window will open. Repeat so you have two windows. In other OS find a way to open a command or terminal window.
In one window type 'ping 192.168.1.1 -t' and hit enter, it will bounce packets off your router until stopped with Ctrl/C or closing the window. If you get an error try 192.168.0.1 instead (router's IP address as per...
Thanks John - that sounds like the sort of thing I was expecting.
To make sure (I'm still learning what everything is!), is the card concerned likely to be this:
Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet controller
Or am I looking at the wrong thing?
(I have to work now, so may not be able to reply for a while, but thanks so much for helping)...
That was fun!
I had to use 192.168.0.1 and the other one just timed out straight away.
The result - both my router/modem and Demon timed out at the same time.
What does that tell me?

that the problem is between the PC and the router, not the router and the internet. Try a different ethernet port on the router, just in case.
If rebooting the PC without touching the router fixes it then it does point to the PC or Operating System

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.
MaxDSL ...
Thanks for that.
I have tried a different port on the router (and a different router), so don't think that's the answer.
Where do I start looking in my PC/OS for the problem?
I will try updating the driver for my ethernet card as advised on here, but would that be the problem if it's suddenly started happening?
security software can be a problem (firewall), disable it for 30 mins to see if it helps.
Card may be faulty, only option is to put a new one in an expansion slot to compare. Try forcing existing card to 100M full duplex in the driver settings.

It's been a while now and my connection hasn't dropped out since upgrading the ethernet controller driver! ) I have noticed however, that my connection speed appears to be very slow when I first log on. So slow that it won't even open the Google home page for several minutes if at all. I have performed a ping test while the speed appears slow and it came back instantly without losing any data. I also now have a...

Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, BitTorrent, eMule are all tools of the trade.
Might be the anti-virus prog on the desktop - they tend to be set to download updates every day and, this will take longer on a slower speed connection. More likely is programs running the in the background at startup. Try opening Task Manager straight after you login and have a look at both the Networking and Performance tabs. Under Performance, enable the "Show Kernel Times" option. You can set the update speed to High too...
