For ideas and is bordering on plagiarism more than being influrenced imo.
Sea Folk v Sethi
Both are sea faring cultures that are the best saliors in there world.
Both use facial piercings to denote Rank and Clan and have similar titles.
Both have there women sailors go topless.
White Cloaks v Lae'Knaught
Both hate magic users and hunt them down.
Both are independant ...
borrowed intensively, more than raped. Worldbuilding is not the strong
point of Night Angel books. I would say Brent has a distinctive voice, and
was more focused on characters and action, so i'm not bothered by the
similarities you point out.
Was not David Drake the one people complaining about imitating slavishly WoT?
Or X,Y and Z - pick your epic fantasy authors at least pre Martin/00's - that were slavishly imitating Tolkien?
I haven't read Weeks, so I can't be certain, but based on the comparisons you are making ChrisW, it doesn't sound like you are reaching. In fact, it sounds rather disappointing, since I was looking forward to reading these books.
suciul, yes Drake was the one whose books closely (too closely IMO) resembled WoT. Of course I only read the first 3 Drake books, so perhaps later ones go their own...

I wonder if the bound and collared women whose duty is to please and submissively do as they're told by their masters even though they are treated like pets would close the deal? But ...
Oh for crying out loud --
Where can we find, before and after Jordan:
a land which has a seafaring race -- pretty much everybody in secondary fantasy world fiction. Let's make them like gypsy pirates! -- pretty much half -- let's have them have weather magic -- 75%
tough female warriors who are semi-nude or wear scimpy clothing -- pretty much everybody since the 1950's. Oh yeah, ...
me is preparing....
1 bag of popcorn, a 6 pack of beer, 3 cigarillos and an automated f5 presser.
this is goin' to be better than any prime time tv. let's get it rollin'
Quote: Chris -- I'm sorry if you feel I'm still misinterpreting you, but you titled this thread and proposed its central contention, not me. You have said that Jordan did combinations of elements, and that Weeks' work is not just similar, but that Weeks ripped Jordan off: "when they are put together it seems Weeks didn't have to do much "research" to come up with ideas." Either you are...
Quote: Perhaps it's my view that somehow RJ has some ownership of those ideas that is the main issue. You think? I believe I've said that throughout the thread. Quote: The difference is RJ acknowledges it and that he didn't continue with it throughout the entire series. The difference is that you give Jordan a free pass on this issue of yours because you like Jordan and because you have a subjective, frequently shifting...

Obviously, the main story with its street rat turned assassin turned avenging...
Just finished the first book. Great, great stuff! Fantastic debut. I was reading this at every opportunity, and so much so that yesterday as I was on my way home from work on the subway, and I was reading the climax and totally missed my stop, which has never happened to me before while I was reading....so a testament to how good I found it. The story, the characters, the setting...all great and enjoyable. I have Shadow's Edge (the 2nd...

Psylent... no one is denying Jordan's influence. It's the notion that Weeks somehow stole from Jordan. All the elements described here have been in abundance before Jordan himself implemented them in various shapes and form, not solely from literary means. They weren't Jordan's per se to be stolen from.
