Thread: Braves Discussing Extension for Vazquez

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by cobrasnake
David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that "Someone here at the meetings who would probably know, told me the Braves have at least discussed trying to sign [Javier] Vazquez to a contract extension." Vazquez was quietly an elite pitcher for Atlanta in 2009, posting a 2.87 ERA in 219 1/3 innings, striking out 238 and walking just 44. He's signed to an $11.5MM deal for ...

Personally, I hope its true. I'm a believer in Vazquez despite some of the negatives some have claimed about him. Actually, it may have been one of ATL's better moves to get him, he rewarded ATL with a very good year, so why would we trade him ? True, in theory he'll bring more, but who will be willing to part with a hitter as good as Vaz is as a pitcher? I can't imagine a trade that could ...

I can't believe that 51 and I are the only fans to post on this thread in its first hour and a half of life. I hope we keep him. I would rather ride the top of the team-pitching lines in 2010, than I would blowing 10M on a not that great outfielder. Javy is a very good pitcher that is on our team. I am skeptical that we are simply going through the process. Whenever a great player is a ...

I'd love for him to stay. What I would love most is to dump Lowe on anyone for absolutely anything. I think he still has some value but his contract is just too big for us. I would trade him for absolutely nothing just to get rid of his contract if I could. Then we would have Hudson, Vazquez, Jurrjens, Hanson, and Kawakami. That is a rock solid starting 5. Sign Mike Cameron for center field, ...

I hope he stays, too. The only way I'd want him traded is if it landed us a legit #4 hitter. I'm not talking about a #5 or #6 hitter masquerading as a #4 hitter like McCann. I mean a real #4 hitter with 40-plus homer potential. Javy has the best pure stuff of anyone in the Braves rotation. For whatever reason, he's been able to get his head in the game this season, and the Braves have reaped ...

I am pretty much on board with you, spastic.

Javy likes ATL and he likes Cox. This dude has problems on the field when he doesn't like where his home games are played. I wouldn't be surprised if he took a discount. I really believe that using Javy to get a bat will not help our team. He, alone, will not net a high-end slugger. Because of this, why not just push the extension? Pitching and defense will get us to the playoffs....

That would be interesting, but they won't let him go. If he would walk more, he would be the face of the game... the next Jeter.

the only way this is true, is if they move Lowe. So there must be interested teams at a reduced salary, or something along those lines. thats bad news for derek.. this rumor.

That's true hanson, but I'm still skeptical of the true angle. I don't think there is real interest in Lowe. That is why I am afraid we aren't going hard on the efforts to sign Javy. I think they may be doing what I don't want. I well could be paranoid, but I do know what happens before a great player gets dealt.

"I can't believe that 51 and I are the only fans to post on this thread in its first hour and a half of life." Yeah I was a little suprised by that as well...lol I've kind of been in the middle the whole time as far as what picher to trade. I think it's pretty easy to say that almost any fan would like to see Lowe gone over Vazquez. That's pretty easy when you look at what they both did during there first...

Good to see a few agree that Vaz is a keeper. Finding a deal for Lowe-any deal- is going to be hard, and may amount to a giveaway, but to free up $15 M, its worth it. As to GG's comment about a trade for Derrick Lee plus eat some salary, IDK, it makes the lineup look great, but I see Lee of the same status as Lowe, a once great player in decline, and since we already have that, do we want 2? Yet for a salary reduction from Lee, on one...

Also Jim Duquette was on radio this morning and a Braves fan called in and suggested this trade and heres his answer Lowe to Yankees for Kei Igawa and Shelley Duncan and he stated its basically a salary dump so they can get a hitter with the money saved ... Duquette said ..i dont wanna be mean but id like to have you on other end when i made trades .. Igawa and Duncan arent close to value for Lowe ..he said LOWE was a 15 game winner and has...

That's the thing.. He'd be worth 9-10 million, but he is making 15. So while, yes, he DEFINITELY has value and could be very serviceable to A LOT of teams. But whoever takes him is on the hook for 3 years, 45 million. That's why I think, for our team, it makes the most sense to dump him for absolutely ANYTHING just to get rid of that contract. Our rotation is actually IMPROVED without him, which isn't the case for most...

I'm just throwing it out there because I think it could be possible. I would love to see the Braves trade Lowe for anyone, and I mean anyone, and not have to eat up his salary. That way going into next offseason if Freeman has a lack luster year I would want to see the Braves make a serious run at Derek Lee. Some would say, "Why not just trade for Lee and try to sign him to an extension?" To that I would say the Cubs...

I like your idea, and I would add that we should also try to sign LaRoche to a 3 year deal. If Freeman ends up tearing it up this year, we trade LaRoche next year. Vazquez Hudson Jurrjens Hanson Kawakami That's a great 1-5. We'd have a good chance to win every night. DIaz 15 homers, 15 SB (High average, good OBP and aggressive on the bases) McLouth 20 homers 20 SB Jones 20 homers McCann 25 homers Cameron 25 homers LaRoche 25 homers...
