If the center hole closed up you must have over boiled it. Read the instructions on the package. They tell you how long to boil it. As for the biting part, I bit down firmly. You can feel the mouthguard give way to your biting.

Don't most mouthguards that have a hole have a little hard plastic thing in them that you don't take out until after you've fit it to your mouth?

your mouthguard should come with a plastic stick to keep the hole open when making your impression

plastic thing ftw! then again, for rugby and JJ I rock the dollar fifty uber-cheap boil and bite ones, in assorted colors, available at your local sporting goods store!

you can buy an everlast double mouthpiece for like $5 at a sports store and there is a little plastic thing in the middle of it and you do not take it out until the mouthpiece fits exactly the way you want it to.

You are not supposed to take the plastic piece out until you have it fitted properly

Read the instructions maybe? There is a reason they come with instructions.
