Thread: Blu-ray running time

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by davidweller
This may be a "how long is a piece of string" question - but what is the maximum running time of a Blu-ray disc? I only ask as most multi-disc sets seem to have the same number of discs as the DVD version. I would have thought that it would be possible to put more material on a single disc given Blu-ray's greater storage capacity.

Both the Star Trek TOS and The Prisoner Blurays have 5 episodes on some discs where the dvd has a max of 4. While the capacity of a Bluray is far more than a dvd , the space required for HD pix rather than SD is also far larger. Obviously a Bluray holding all SD material would fit 10 dvd's worth onto a DL Bluray but for HD I would guess the capacity is similar to dvd ...

I've read the average 2 hour film on Blu-ray takes up somewhere between 20-25GB, so four hours approx running time on a 50GB dual layer Blu-ray disc which is the same as standard DVD.
