Just take an LED and mount it in a little box, drill a hole and glue the LED in. take the + pin and join a red wire with a 2mm plug on the end and this always goes to pin 3 in the 38 pin socket. take a black or what ever colour lead and join it to the - of the LED some insert a 1k resistor in series, it depends on the LED and this is the test lead.
You can also use a analogue volt ...

You can use an analogue volt meter and count the blips from the needle
yes, but the power probe has the switch built in (for earthing), has all the connections needed and also has a 1001 uses! i usually check things like duo valves with them as the led shows +ve and -ve. a great tool.
