Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by andyn
This morning I received a "startup disk is full" warning and opened Finder to reveal that my boot drive has 60MB free. This is odd because I normally keep 80-100GB free. I use Time Machine as well as Carbon Copy Cloner for backups. I don't do anything fancy and I've hardly used my computer at all for the past few weeks. I am baffled. I ran WhatSize to get a better idea of where the bulk was...

Your /Volumes folder should contain no folders at all. In your case, it looks like your directory structure is severely corrupted. I would first run DiskWarrior on the drive to rebuild the structure. Once that's complete, use Finder's Go menu -> Go to Folder… to get to "/Volumes" and delete any folders that remain there. Leave any aliases alone. They belong there.

Big question before you go deleting anything: Do you have any external drives attached to the computer? Unplug them before deleting anything from /Volumes. Also, do NOT delete the link in there that has the same name as your boot drive!!

Thanks for your help - both of you. I'm running Disk Warrior this afternoon, and I will _absolutely_ not delete any aliases in /Volumes. Thanks! Andy

I suggest you look at: My boot/source disk has GROWN ...or is FULL for the *safe* way to deal with what you have discovered, and for the explanation.
