I was just wondering if you guys had any recommendations on what characters I should level up in the beginnig or who are the most useful throughout the game. Right now I am using Morrigan, Alastair and my dog.
Its at the lower left part of the map, the monsters you fight are pretty easy as long as you don't rush into open spaces with a bunch after you, they have a 5 or so archers that will pick you off if not careful. My party at the moment is me(Arcane Mage/Spirit Healer), Leliana(Ranged attack and Bard skills) , Shale(Uber tank), and Wynne(healer - soon to be replaced by another dps once my mage ...
My first group was me(dwarf tank, Morrigan, dog and leliana). Worked out well til near the end. 2nd time through was me(dalish rogue) wynne, sten and shale tanking. That group was oh so easy. Although listening to Sten was getting on my nerves. Wish I coulda inducted him into the Grey Wardens.
Your party should be based around your character. If you are playing a tank, than have a rogue and two mages, one a caster, the other a healer. That's how I am playing. My characters a tank, and I have in my group Leliana, Morrigan, and Wynne. I'll change it up with my next run through.
It depends on the situation really. Leliana is good for any party, due to being bale to lockpick and disarm traps (and her being a Bard/Ranger Archer helps the party). So no matter what you're rolling, I'd bring her, UNLESS you made a rogue and decided to get the lockpick skills on him. Then you can potentially bypass her. But even still, a dual blade rogue can function as a tank, so you may ...
I myself think Sten is epic, personality wise. I've yet to seek out Shale since I wanted to do wardens keep and find the Arcane Fighter class first. He's next on my to-do list.
My party was made up of my character (spirit healer), Alistair, Zevran, and Shale/my dog. My party worked out fairly well. Even though I couldn't pick locks, it didn't matter much. I sold 90% of the items I found and money wasn't an issue in the game so it wasn't a big deal to me. *SPOILER* Its funny that you all call Shale "he." Shale is in fact a woman. Or, was, rather.
