Thread: Best Travel Utensils/Spork?

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by izzik
I am looking for a well-designed, durable set of utensils.. just a spoon and fork.. or even the infamous "spork". Something that can be reused but can withstand being tossed into a carry-on bag (or maybe has a case for protection). This is mainly to ...

REI sells some decent utensils. Go for the hard plastic ones (not the metal ones). They used to sell a fork, knife, and spoon that were attached by a plastic ring, which is handy if you tend to lose things, but my local store doesn't seem to carry those anymore. I've been around the world with them, and they've never broken. ...

I like the idea of having a full set of utensils on a keyring.. I guess it would just be stored in a plastic ziploc or something.

If its a fork and spoon you're after, why not just take a metal one from home(or from the plane)? I have 2 of each in my bag right now, and every now and then security will ask if I have them in my bag, but that's as far as it's ever gone. If you want a knife that might be a different issue. Very durable, and when I get home, I ...

I have a titanium spork from Mountain Equip Coop in Toronto (Mec.ca--they also mail order). It was under $10, is extremely light, folds up into a small size and is very very useful. I would highly recommend it. I have never tried carrying it in a carry-on. Anyone know if that would be a security issue? thanks

You can always play the handyman: buy those utensils, drill a small hole in each, and put them on a keyring... I've got the ones from REI. I take them to work with me for eating my lunch. They hold up very well.

If they're attached to your keyring, do you have to wash them before/after use? The thought of mingling utensils that I put in my mouth with dirty keys just sounds unappealing to me.

I know you can remove it, but then you have the hassle and removing/putting back on the utensil. The "key ring" that the REI utensils come/came with was, in reality, nothing more than a plastic ring with an easy-open clasp. There really isn't that much hassle...

For years I used a Boy Scout eating ware kit from the 1970's (Made in USA) but the TSA doesn't let us have real stuff anymore. Since I parked that kit at home I used inexpensive spoons and forks like the ones from fast food places. I also am fond of Europeon dairy products but find that they usually aren't sold near spoons.
