Possibly the best ever is at a HS in Cleveland...the Glenville Tarblooders. Supposedly developed out of a chant of "we'll beat the tar and blood out of you." For some unknown reason their mascot is represented as a robot.

HS Wildcats College Tar Heels Med school Blue Devils Back then my main elementary school didn't have a mascot, but the YMCA teams the school fielded took college mascot names, as did all the other Gra-Y schools' teams. Our third grade football team was the St. Matthews Seminoles. We played the Gators, the Bears, the Volunteers, the Hawkeyes, the Horned Frogs, and others, and in ...

They were not particularly successful in athletics, either (city rival Lincoln was a track powerhouse, for example), so maybe they wanted to turn over a new leaf.

For example, our HS mascot was the Bulldogs but the JHS was the Bullpups. The best of these is Gonzales with the Apaches and Papooses. Probably a small town thing, where there is a 1:1 correspondence between jr/middle and high schools. That being said, Loyola Marymount U's teams are the Lions, while Loyola...

Well, I'll be danged. We better tell the local sports writers. Mustang had an outstanding middle distance runner, now at OU, a couple years back who led the "Mustangs" to X-C glory. As I recall, he placed high at Footlocker.

So in the Frankfurt airport this morning I got stuck in the security line behind the 100-strong (seemed like 200) X Polar Bears marching band, on their way from the U.S. to Madrid (no, don't know why). Who knows what school is the Polar Bears? (I certainly didn't) In fact, I don't think I'd ever even heard of the city the university is located in. But here's a clue. I have heard of a city by that name in Oklahoma. So...

I ran with Todd at BGSU. He now coaches in Toledo. Your memory fails you; Todd's PR is 1:46.00. Another college teammate was Jimmy's HS coach back in Pemberville (one of my favorite small towns in Ohio). BTW, I always thought O'Brien looked a bit like someone familiar ... Sandusky is home to Cedar Point amusement park and a grand old wooden roller coaster named the Blue Streak. Sandusky's teams are also the Blue Streaks,...
