Thread: Best Picture winners that ACTUALLY deserved to win

Started 6 months, 2 weeks ago by ddk999
Of its nominating class, this was IMHO the least deserving of the award. At the very least, Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Good Night and Good Luck were better films and more deserving of the award. Crash was politically correct, manipulative tripe with all the subtlety of being hit over the head with a heavy and blunt shovel. This movie winning best picture was embarrassing at the time (...

Brokeback Mountain was robbed that year. Far better film than Crash in all respects, IMHO. I think, generally, the academy get it right though. this year, for example, Slumdog was by far the best film on offer. 2004 was one year I was disappointed by the result, but looking back on it Million Dollar Baby did deserve to win - I wanted Ray to get it at the time. One that I think was quita a ...

Crash was politically correct, manipulative tripe with all the subtlety of being hit over the head with a heavy and blunt shovel. This movie winning best picture was embarrassing at the time (2006). I completely agree. While I agree with the social message it's trying to send, I don't like the way it "hits you over the head" with it. It's just bad movie making, plain and simple. Every scene...

I agree. I think that In the Valley of Elah, Haggis' most recent creation, was far better than Crash, which was painfully heavy handed. There were some great scenes in the film, but on the whole, I thought Crash was preachy in a simplistic way. I nearly fell off my couch when it won the Oscar.

-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------- Unforgiven, Schindlers List, Braveheart, Silence of the Lambs (although only just ahead of JFK for me), Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest (though 75 was a very strong year), Lawrence of Arabia, all deserved to win imo. ...

I feel this decade, the only movies that deserved their Picture Oscars were Gladiator (I know, a bad choice, but it's an amazingly well-done film), Return of the King, The Departed and, to an extent, Million Dollar Baby. 2001 - Fellowship of the Ring 2002 - The Hours 2005 - Brokeback Mountain 2007 - There Will be Blood 2008 - Milk We will be cruel to the Germans, and through our ...

How can you accuse him of not knowing much about Oscars? What does having 4 other oscar wins have to do with anything. Jaws, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and Dog Day Afternoon are three movies that nearly every critic agrees would've won best picture had they not all been up against eachother. The other awards that One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest won are; Best Actor, Best Actress,...

I think this was the only year I saw all 5 nominees... Crash to me was the MOST deserving. It was Brokeback Mountain, Capote and espcially the unsufferable Phillip Seymour Hoffman that were all overhyped. Crash, was a masterpiece, I knew wouldn't be remembered past the summer. Thankfully, I was wrong.

I think he was referring to the fact that ALL the films that won had won Best Picture.

Some of the best of the Best Pictures for me? Cuckoo's Nest, Shakespeare in Love (with the footnote I didn't see Saving Private Ryan), American Beauty, Crash (Brokeback Mountain was more important, but it was NOT a better movie by any stretch...Lust, Caution however got robbed!).. Chicago, Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven, Silence of the Lambs, Ordinary People, Driving Miss Daisy..... Some...

I don't need you to tell me what problems I have in my argument...there are very few times in which I actually take a know it all, like you, seriously. This is not one of them. One thing you clearly mess stems in the Best Picture analsysis-we are not going on and on regarding the acting but on the MOVIE. You know, the costumes, the acting, the directing, the cinematography, etc. Brokeback Mountain beat Crash in all of these by spades,...

I liked The Squid and the Whale the best of all the movies that year. So we agree on something. Hmmmm.

The problem with your argument is that that Acadmey has a penchant for choosing films that portray gay men in stereotypical roles, either as someone with AIDS who sings opera in his living-room, while strapped to an I.V. drip, as in Philadelphia (love the chaste buss on the cheek between Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas), or a heterosexual man -chasing drag queen in prison for trouble concerning young boys, as in Kiss of the Spieder Woman, or as...

It did not deserve to be nominated. Half the performances were shoddy and the script was a mess. And I liked "Crash" better when John Sayles directed it and it was called "Lone Star."

Err... You want to see Spielberg vilify Jews? Let's see... Wiktionary: vilify - (transitive) To say defamatory things about someone or something. Your political views (as simplistic and populism-based as they seem to be) seem to be interfering with your ability to interpret, understand, an ultimately - enjoy good cinema. I'd suggest you rethink your approach to life. :) --------------------------- Matrix Reloaded? A disgrace....

The Pianist and L.A. Confidential should have both taken a BP Oscar.

"It did not deserve to be nominated." Sorry but I just don't agree with this. I do however respect the fact that you praise Lone Star which I think is a tremendous film. I'd be interested to read your opinion as to what films should have been contending the Oscar in 2005.

I didn't originally intend for my rhetorical question to be answered, but you answered it well. :P I just think that while some good movies are represented in the Oscars, a lot aren't and that will be a continuous problem. If only there was a way that the Oscars could be more... I guess accurate would be a good word to describe it, although this is obviously a very big if. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone.
