Thread: Best Budget? TV ~£400?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by el_nello
Hopefully one of you fine people can help me out. I have a budget of around £400 for a new TV. From looking about it seems that a 32" is the biggest screen I'll get at this price while still being reasonable quality. The samsung LE32B550 is one I'm seriously considering as it has pretty good reviews and supposedly handles SD footage well (which will probably be the majority of usage) ...

I'll never buy a samsung TV again after the shoddy/cheap power components burnt out in mine after only 2 years. So personally I'd recommend against that TV. There is a 42 inch Toshiba that everyone seems to like... Toshiba £479

Thanks for the info. That does sound a bit worrying. Unfortunately the Toshiba is outside my budget although it is tempting to get a bigger screen for not much more outlay.

The Sammy is no more likely to die then any other. I have one that is going strong some 4 years after purchase, I have one that developed a fault after 18 months and that still didn't stop me buying another. As for a Toshiba, I had one of those fail after 18 months, and that was a CRT.

The Samsung LE32B550 is probably one of the best LCD's you will find for Standard Def viewing (certainly at that price point) - Samsung spent an absolute fortune on new upscaling technology so you shouldn't go wrong in that regard. The only thing I would say (if you plan to use with a console) is the input lag on these B550 TV's are not the greatest but are very acceptable if you engage Game Mode...

Gaming use doesn't really go beyond occassional wii action so I'm not too worried about that. It'll be mostly fed SD from a cable box. I do watch a reasonable amount of sports, so that is a consideration. I looked at the Panasonic and LG but it looks like the LG is too far out of my budget. Panasonic is at the limit of what I could try to stretch to but I'm not sure it has enough advantages ...

I haven't managed to see one in a shop yet...
