Thread: Best ADSL2+ Ethernet Bridging Modem :: DSL Hardware Discussion :: think broadband

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by NeoLojik
Hello all, Ever since I first got ADSL I've been using combined modem/routers. Whilst it's great that they just sit there and work, I'm now looking to split this into a separate modem + router. Currently my network is basically as such: Phone line <--> DG834GT <---> Gigabit switch <---> PC's I run a 24/7 Linux server here and I'd like to use that to perform all routing and...

Figured I'd reply with what I've spent the evening learning ^^ It sounds like the best product for the job is the DrayTek Vigor 120, a true PPPoA to PPPoE bridge. I'd then use the Linux box to handle authentication to my ISP with PPPoE. Has anyone had any experience with this modem? It's a little more than I was hoping to spend, especially as I'm also looking for a PCI / PCI-e ...

I used the DG834GT, with the DGTeam firmware as a modem and had it connected to a FVS338. The 338 did all the auth, firewall, routing etc, and the DG834GT just did modem stuff. I also used it as a modem connected to a box running Astaro, although since I've been on BE there's no authentication but still the DG834GT did the modem stuff and Astaro all the firewall and routing etc. ...

If you use BT Wholesale supplied ADSL services, it's hard to beat the BT Voyager 190 as a bridge modem - there are no user configurable settings.

Due to my budget I was considering using my DG834GT in bridge mode, or getting the BT modem, but I just struck lucky on ebay and managed to snag a brand new Vigor 120 for just £25, half the retail price. After looking at all the options the Vigor was my preferred choice, what with it being a true PPPoA to PPPoE bridge. Now I just need to source a decent Linux compatible 802.11n ...

Just thought I'd throw a little update here. Received my Vigor 120 on Monday, despite the postal strikes. Tuesday my D-Link DWA-556 Wireless N NIC arrived and I set about configuring everything. My Linux box is now routing internet traffic for the whole network and is doing a fantastic job. The Vigor 120 is a cracking little modem and literally "just works". True plug and play ^u...

I'd also recommend the Vigor. In the past used Linksys ADSL2MUE and ADSLNation X-Modem as bridging modems but got the Vigor for a new office setup at work which links through to a Netgear firewall SSL VPN router, WiFi access point and Windows SB 2008 server. It's worked flawlessly for a year. Never had to touch it since the initial install and everything is passed through to the router/AP/...
