The soft sleepers are clean and comfortable. The main thing is that you save money for the hotel that night.
However I never take train ride so long. Just a matter of taste. I like a comfortable bed and to have a shower in the morning.
These trains are not cheap and it can be cheaper to fly. If there are 2 of you then what you save by flying can pay for the hotel room.

Hi,
Yes you pay by credit card. You need to register first & get a user name. They will send you confirmation one you have booked & paid. You do not actually get an ETicket. Your booking will be entered into the airlines booking system so when you arrive to check in at the airport you just need to show your passport.
C-trip will charge you are small booking free.
There is ...
You can use the fare alert feature on ctrip then book on travelzen which does not charge a fee for foreign credit cards. Fares are usually the same on both. You can wait until a week or so before to get better discounts but if you use the fare alert you may get a good price sooner without having to check price daily.
I strongly recommend the D Train. You know , it is the top class train in China, newly released. on the train you can enjoy the luxurious facilities, pleasing service. the soft sleeper price is ¥655 & ¥730 ( a little more than $100). You will surely have a sound rest through the night.
The travel duration on D Train is 10 hours. 5 D Trains leaves Beijing South Station for Shanghai...
While I do like the overnight train, it is also true that not everyone can get a good night's sleep on it, however comfortable it is.
For the flights, I have nearly always been able to get discounts using the online services mentioned above, so whether you are a foreigner or not has no relevance.
The information above is not exact.
Foreigners pay the same as Chinese and we get the same discounts. Just use the website such as ctrip.com (biggest market share in China) or travelzen.com
Actually if you buy from your hotel travel desk or any travel agent on the street, you will pay the same price everywhere.
As I said, I have paid as little as 300rmb to fly Beijing-...
Oh , sorry I never noticed you can manage a reservation on website like ctrip... do they have an Eng. version? Ok..
excuse me ... I just drew the conclusion from my foreign friends' experience. You know they just go to the air ticket office in Xidan and you cannot bargain there...
I never mean there is price discrimination on foreigners.. What i say is just worry ...
It's actually easier to buy plane tickets than train tickets. You can get the plane tickets online - ctrip, travelzen - but you need to go to the station or get an agent to buy a train ticket.
I've traveled both ways and the train is a fun and different experience - my kids liked it - but for normal commuting the plane is much better.

I was not sure if prices were the same. they are not at home. When I tried booking online India was not on the host country list. Wasn't sure if it was ok to pick China instead?
