Gentlemen, Ladies,
I made myself very happy this week, buying the opportunity to learn with an '89 Range Rover and I'm stoked... I'd be grateful for any practical advice on how you learned, are there classes or workshops or "engine rebuild Tuesday nights" at someone's home, is there a better book than the Haynes Manuals? I don't have an automotive background or deep pockets but I'm patient ...

Disagree.
I have spent a lot of time behind the wheel in friends' P38s and newer MKIIIs and I wouldn't consider trading my RRC for one of those for a second. ...
I disagree as well...
I have a 96 P38 and a 91 Classic. Even though the P38 has a bit more power, I like driving the Classic better. It's more fun off road too and easier to work on.
However, if you are not mechanically inclined and are driving a rover, you had better have deep pockets..
also agree on classics vs 2nd gen Range Rover. bought my 2000 used and kept
it for only a year. My Discovery II was a much better vehicle. but my
classic... i don't think about selling it.
Oh yea, find the RAVE workshop manual. It's hard to find the PDF online but is worth the frustration. It breaks down every system and gives pretty good instructions on how to fix it.
Again though, Im happy you are stoked about your rover and they are awesome (I have the bug too)... but can be very problematic. Definitely not for someone who isnt a somewhat experienced mechanic.

Welcome aboard the crazy train Hightop32.
I too have been biten by the LR bug. I fell in love with an ugly girl (my series III 109") that needed a lot of work. It proved easy and fun to work on and I now trust it to get me anywhere (albeit at no more than 50 mph)...and then I got over confident and bought a '94 RRC. This damn rig (that I love) tests my pateince and mechanical skill at every ...
ok guys everyone is entitled to their own opinions based on personal or otherwise acquired experiences.
what I'm getting to is that every year there is a differnce albeit minimum between the classics. 87 had a 3.5 with lt230 very simple,88 had a sunroof, 89 county and hunter, beginning of abs and updated cv joints as well as b/w t case.. , 90 3.9 and heated wind shield, 91 and 92 updated ...
Get ready to enjoy a labor of love with that rover. I dont mean it in a bad way, you simply always want to improve your rover once you get hang of it. I am also a new rover owner I have a 93' RRC and I love it. Here is the link to the RAV CD where you can downloaded. Rav Info is like your dictionary/Bible for Rovers. Good luck and enjoy that Classic.

The classic were designed to be off the road, to me thats the seller the
classics are more fun. Plus who doesnt like dumping a ton of money into
thier car and fixing it all the time? thats the best part
