Thread: Bassett Hound smells

Started 1 month, 4 weeks ago by rwethereyet (Premo)
My basset hound stinks. I know hounds normally stink but he is awful. I took him to the groomers and he was stinking again by the next day. I think I remember someone saying one time hounds need to have "stink" glands cleared out. That does sound right? And if so, is it something the groomer can do or do I need to take him to the vet?

Have you had his ears checked by a vet? Bassetts are known for ear infections due to their long ears. An ear infection can cause an odor. Also, numerous skin infections can cause an odor on a dog. Worth checking into. Anal glands themselves do not cause the dog to stink. If they get full, you can have the vet express them. The liquid that comes out is very smelly, but you won't smell that...

Did you wash all of his bedding when he came back from the groomers?

Could be allergies. Our dog has allergies and it comes out in his skin and he stunk to high heaven. Doc told me to try changing his food to one that did not have corn in it. Look for a venison based or all lamb based food. It will be more expensive but you use less and the smell goes away. If that doesn't work then he has other allergies like to grass or something else, then you might need ...

Call the groomer and ask if they expressed his anal glands when he was groomed. If it was his glands you would know- it totally stinks. Small dogs need to have it done more often then large dogs, if you ever see your dog "scooting" his butt on the floor that's what's wrong. They need to be emptied. Some breeds have an odor, and as they get older it gets stronger. Skin problems will make the odor even stronger. Skin...
