Thread: Bar under the rear seat?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by icudruln
What's the grayish-silver that runs from either side of the car for? I took out my rear seats; is it just support for the bottom piece of the seat?

OEM chassis stiffening, I suppose.

I think it has to do with side crash testing...Just a thought. It is very firm though it might provide some stiffness.

Oh... When I removed my rear seat my brother asked what it was. I said it was bracing because its a Rally car.. LOL I figured it was mostly a butt support.

It probably does add some marginal stiffness, but its connected to the floor pan, not the chassis. Lightening the car can add quite a bit of stiffness in its own right.

I was quite surprised when I removed that bar, it weighs a ton!! I don't really think it adds too much chassis stiffness with the location but I could be wrong. I have not noticed the difference with handling at the track not enough to put that 10 lbs bar back in.

I have read all over that this thing is supposed to be for chassis stiffening and/or side impact protection. If you look at where it connects you'll see that if the car is crushed in that far from a side impact your rear passengers are hamburger anyway. It only connects one side of the floor pan to the other, which I suppose could feasibly give some lateral strength to the floorpan at that point, but those points ain't where the...
