Thread: Ban Declawing?

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by OrangeblossomB
Quote: California cities act to ban cat declawing L.A. is among those rushing to prohibit the practice before a state law backed by a group of vets says they can't. Reporting from San Francisco and Beverly Hills - The law of unintended consequences has seldom been more clearly illustrated than by the catfight unfolding from San Francisco to Los Angeles. ...

I would never declaw my cat. Even an indoor cat can get outdoors on accident and without claws they have no way to defend themselves. I think it should be banned. It seems so cruel to me. Whats next, circumcising your cat?

In Australia any vet caught declawing a cat is de registered. Also ear cropping and docking of tails in dogs when purely for looks. All should be banned world wide. They are cruel and un necessary. I did one year working for the RSPCA last year, and I very much enjoyed watching the police put handcuffs on people who did this. If you want a cat, and want it de clawed, go buy yourself a ...

we are having my cat declawed, but not because of scratching furniture. actually, i never really had a problem with him scratching anything he wasnt supposed to. he will be declawed because he has a disease that causes his teeth to fall out and his nails to partly decay and turn black. whenever we clip his nails, it causes extreme pain (due to his disease). he is an indoor cat and it breaks my ...

My cat has her claws b/c she has never been a problem. But if she started scratching my furniture she would either: 1. get declawed 2. Go to the SPCA where she would probably end up getting put down since they have too many cats. But no way would she ruin my house.

I think it's cruel and aside from extreme situations(like Elizabeths) I think it should be banned. When an extreme situation arises I think the vet along with the pet owner should have to put in a claim as to why they need the procedure and a board should have the right to decide. I love my dog like a second child and there is no way I would ever put him through a procedure like that just ...

They also make these rubbery things called "soft paws" that you can get glued to your cat's claws if you have a scratcher. No declawing needed.

When we had a cat, I'd just clip her claws every couple weeks. That cut out the furniture scratching. I'd never declaw a cat. I've seen it done. I worked at vet's office for 2 years, while in college. It is the equivalent of pulling out your fingernails. I can see doing it for medical reasons, if the cat has a disease, like Elizabeth described, but not for selfish reasons. If you don't ...

We don't have cats so I can't give my own personal decision on it. I do appreciate Elizabeth's post as it gives a reason beyond 'furniture saving' for performing a declawing. Just in reading that post, I see the negative in a 'full ban', as that means that cats like Elizabeth's have to deal with pain weekly for their claw clipping. How is that humane when there is a one-time procedure that if ...
