Thread: Backing up for a reformat - Best approach?
Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by LindleyF
I have an error "Invalid PEOF" on my TiBook G4's hard drive. It's been there for years, and I've worked around it, but I'd like to finally sort it out. Neither Norton nor TechTool Pro nor Disk Utility are able to solve it.
As best I can tell, the only way to do this is to reformat the HD. However, I don't know where my 10.4 CDs are anymore, so it's necessary for me to save off the ...
What you are doing is not going to work. You need an external FireWire hard drive freshly partitioned using APM and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. You can use the Restore feature of Disk Utility to clone your existing system to the external drive. See the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder
2. After DU loads ...

Norton!? I'd advise getting rid of that.

Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD though.

I have an external drive with Firewire capability, that has plenty of space free. But I'm not prepared to erase what's there. Is there a way to do this using only the available space? I know that both the Boot Camp and TechTool partition utilities are able to add an additional partition without erasing the drive (but not ...

I don't use it anymore. Only reason I tried is because TechTool Pro failed. I also keep it around because it's the only bootable OS9 CD I have, and this particular fault (or a related one, maybe) causes my TiBook not to boot into OSX if shutdown improperly, until it's been booted into OS9 and restarted. Boot-using-OS9-CD-then...
It's possible to repartition a drive on the fly, but only if you are using Leopard and it's Disk Utility. It's also possible that the DU with 10.4.8 and later will also repartition on the fly. However, you will have to set up a large enough partition to clone your PB's drive. You will need a tad more space than the total size of the used space on the PB drive - about 100-500 MBs ...
I played around with Disk Utility in Leopard but couldn't figure out how to re-partition the external drive without erasing it. The '+' button which the help said I should click was grayed out. Does the disk need to be connected via Firewire? Mine has that capability, but I usually keep it hooked up via USB since it's usually less troublesome that way.
EDIT: Nope, that's not it. ...
Open Disk Utility. Select the drive entry for the drive you want to repartition. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Click in the active partition window and grab the sizing gadget in the lower right corner. Drag upwards to free the space you need for the second partition. Then click on the [+] button which will add a new partition in the opened space. Click on the ...

It sounds like you don't have that data backed up - you'd better get it backed up asap.
I'd get another external hard drive. You are going to need another one anyway to back up all the data that you haven't yet been backing up. Use ...
You're probably right. I used to have two external hard drives but one of them started acting up in OSX. I was able to get all my data off it by accessing it in OS9, though.

OK. I guess you are using an earlier version of Tiger that did not yet provide that feature. In that case you cannot repartition without erasing the drive's content. Do you have to backup the entire drive? Can you restrict what you need to save to your Home folder? if so, then you can use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or Silverkeeper - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - to backup just your Home folder to the external drive. This would not...
