Thread: Automatics in GT-40's - GT40s.com

Boys, In the early 90s Audi announced that none of their cars over 200HP would be sold in 2WD trim. That is our problem... In theory a 2WD diesel (pdTDI) would be the best choice (~400Nm and with a decent chipset they can handle over 500Nm as well + they are long geared). The newer ones were 6 speed. Engines that used them are the 1.9 and 2.5 straight5 and V6. t.

Title says it all. I'm interested in the poll results with respect to choosing a transaxle vendor. Plus, I think folks might find it interesting for general knowledge. Please excuse the lack of detail on certain choices or types. I'm not a transaxle expert by far!

Been crusing the site, a lot of good info. Yet, not able to find the exact info I am looking for. I bought a RCR gt40 from Fran Hall. Getting ready to bolt in the power plant mounts, however ther seems to be a cleareance issue with the shift fork and the cross memeber in the back. I have ask for some pics from Fran, however it does not seem he has any. Does anyone have a picture of a G50 4 speed...

So which part of this hotch-potch Chimera would resemble the GT40 ?

I was asked to build a Automatic GTD for a guy who had lost a leg in a motorcycle crash once, but then his wife decided that, with his accident record, getting himself in and out of a GT40 in a hurry would not be safe and the project stopped there. Frank

I'm still curious about the reference to an automatic ZF. Anyone? Doug

paddle shifters would be a cool update... thats all you see in the top class race cars nowadays... stick shifting is like reaching down on a bike's downtube to shift gears on a road bicycle vs brake lever shifting...

My interest was more in the absence of a clutch. Like you, though, I like paddle shifters on cars and STI shifters on bicycles! Doug

Doug Why dont you graft a stockcar auto that discards the converter and uses a bypass tap for neutral on to an IRS Quick change centre section. You can buy them in a 'shorty' version which ...

KEP says that the Audi 5000 auto transaxle is a metric copy of the Ford C4. As such I would think it would be fairly durable, but everything I have heard says they aren't. Does anyone have any further information about these or are any of the later automatic transaxles configured for 2WD so that they would be useable in a mid-engine installation? The Toronado is very heavy and places the ...

The Chrysler units should be very available. They were in the Intrepids which were famous for sludging up with low miles. I believe they were also in a lot of their minivans.

The old Toro/Eldo transaxles are longitudinal and are based on the turbo 400. They are basically bullet proff. I know of a Kelmark GT with an injected 700+HP ZL1 BBchevy using a Toro transaxle. The biggest problem was that the best R & P was 3:23 from the factory. However, there is a company that makes a 3:73 for these. The R & P is 9.5" in diameter and can be built with most of the HP parts for...

Just remembered, I had a friend that built a Cimbria SS kit car (a long time ago) with a TH425 powered by a 302 Ford.

The poll only allows ten choices and I chose the most popular ten transaxles that I am aware of being used in GT40 replicas. Your boxes would be covered in the "Other" category.

Found some really good info on the ZF transaxles: Schaltgetriebe | GetriebePro Even shows spare parts. All in German though. Click on the appropriate ZF box listed in the left column under "Schaltgetriebe".

Hey Ian, Very ssssssllllllllooooooowwwwww... Work has been really busy, I've been locating parts mostly and researching. I've turned wrenches a couple of days, but for the most part, it's been organization type stuff. I've got three kids too, so between Little League, Football, homework, Boy Scouts, gymnastics, etc... Free time has been hard to come by! Winter is looking good right now - hopefully I'll get some fuel...
