Thread: Auto to Manual Transmission swop?

Started 1 month, 4 weeks ago by n23ova
How "easy" would it be to swop out an auto tranny for a manual? Put a 240D 4-speed manual into a 300D turbo? Anyone currently driving something like that?

I've always heard that manuals cannot handle the torque from the turbodiesel.

diametricalbenz replied 1 month, 4 weeks ago
It's been done many many times. Winmutt has one Zedd etc.

I read that the reason MB didn't offer it was because of the turbo's "odd power curve" which, from what I can tell, results in a vibration when the engine is lugged.

Haven't seen one but supposedly turbo manuals exist outside of the US market. They were however equipped with the heavier flywheel. The work is not "easy" as it will take parts, time, and driveshaft balancing.

Let me guess, it was one of leathermang's posts you read that from. The USA 300D/CD/TD never got a manual for the same reason they never got ...

No. I use the old iron body transmissions, the synchros are built much better. Left is the original, right is the rebuild I bought.

If one happens to try doing the conversion with a OM617 flywheel it doesn't work with the older iron case transmision.

@ Zedd One can understand that all the American versions had automatics, but why was the 300TDT not sold in Europe with a manual transmission? Even the upper-end 280TE was fitted with a four of five speed manual in Europe. Can't it be that the high torque (250 Nm) at low rpm (2400 rpm) puts extra stress on the manual gear box, making it not durable/reliable? Of course you can fit a manual gear box on a 300TDT, but how durable is it?

I would definitely bet that if you have the getrag trans, it can take it, cause they used those in other cars. Every now and then you might find a 535D manual that I think uses a similar transmission. Those things are powerful and turbocharged.

I heard the same reason Zedd listed for no manuals: 'Mericans lazy, do not want 'Mericans to think of MBs as taxis, if we are going to ship them over to 'Merica, load them with options. Sad, as the best 123 diesel by far I have ever driven is a 240D with the five speed 275 Getrag.
