Thread: Areca vs Adaptec vs 3ware

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by UH-Bobby
Hello all, Of the three raid card brands, which do you think is best and why? I'm currently looking for a card that can do both SAS and SATA, and have four internal ports. Thanks!

For SATA, we have been using Areca cards in our storage arrays for years, and they have done very well. For SAS, we use the Adaptec 5XXX series. The 4-port model is the 5405.

I only use 3ware for SATA, so not sure about SAS, but I am happy with Adaptec card, supporting for both SATA and SAS

Areca has been our favorite, we have had bad bad luck with a lot of the 3ware cards we have used.

We use 3ware and Adaptec, never had a problem. Gotta try and see if i can get an Areca card to test seems everyone is loving them.

Adaptec for sure, we used to use 3Ware exclusively, now we use Adaptec exclusively. We did try some Areca cards but they just weren't up to the job, performed a bit better than the 3ware cards but the tools for them were awful. The Adaptec cards are streets ahead in terms of performance in our experience.

Adaptec has the best overall IO performance, but the management tools in Linux kind of suck (but they do get the job done).

SATA - I will go with Areca SAS - Adaptec 5xxx series.

I absolutely hate Areca.(It's personal). 3Ware hasn't been competitive technically. I will give you a list of potential cards and comments. 1. Adaptec 2405. Really good performance for the price. Entry IOP348@800Mhz Dual Core. No RAID5/6. 2. Adaptec 5405. $100 over the 2405 gives you dual 1.2Ghz IOP348 processor. 3. HP P411. Around the same price as 5405, slower IO processor, ...

LSI is one I'll look at too. So, you commented on 3ware's performance. Does LSI have the performance with the rocksolid parts of 3ware?

They are all in RAID1 configurations, which compared to the 9650-4LPML is about the same, maybe a little bit slower due to the smaller amount of RAM in the cache (2405 has 128MB versus the 256MB in the 4LPML) but so small I...
