Neither. Read the other threads on here about the infamous dinner sequence.

Many Hindus are Vegetarian. Many that do eat meat don't eat Beef (religious) or Pork (just not that available because of the Muslim population).

In the novelization of TOD, it's made clear that the unappetizing choice of cuisine is due to the inhabitants of the palace being not in their right minds, i.e. under the spell of Kali.

I've only watched bits and pieces of this movie during the umpteenth times it's been on cable t.v., but that dinner scene, and just about everything else I've seen of TOD was inaccurate in the extreme. Not only is it racist towards Indians and Hindus (blasphemous, even), it is, also, a totally fabricated and preposterous view as well. That said, Raiders and Crusade are both pretty cool....

I was born Hindu and vegetarian. The whole dinner scene is quite ridiculous and makes Hindu's seem very primitive and blood-thirsty...not quite the truth. The whole movie was littered with little and big discrepancies for me and it kind of killed it for me. Like the areas of the supposedly Hindu village with guards in turbans (indicative of a Sikh, not a Hindu)...little but ...

They're not Hindu. They're Thuggee. Well, maybe Thuggee is a sect of Hindu, I don't know. I just know the inhabitants of Pankot Palace are members of a particular religion that is clearly presented as NOT being representative of Indians or Hindus as a whole. In the script and novelization, as has been mentioned, after the dinner scene, Indy and Blumburtt discuss how odd the dinner ...

Do you mean the guards at Pankot? Mayapore (the village Indy and friends visit prior) had no guards. Although some of the populace including the Chieftain did wear turbans. At any rate, the guards at the palace are described as being "Rajput," if that makes any difference. Chattar Lal also mentions "Rajput tradition" at one point. Of course, it's all pointless since everyone at the ...

Indy's end of the table get the better choice of food, I think. The sheeps' eyes springs from an urban legend about two British dignitaries, at an Indian feast, being shown the eyes of the lamb they were about to eat, to prove it's freshness. To the horror of their host, the British ate the eyes, thinking they were being presented with starters.

So do Hindi really tear out men's hearts with their bare hands? Do Shanghai-o-ans really throw darts and spray rooms with a Chicago typewriter? Are American women really stupid and annoying? Racists!

tpureti replied 1 year, 4 months ago
No, they don't. I'm a Hindu, so I would know. It's annoying how they portrayed Indians here. If you're gonna make fun of someone, make fun of who they are! Not on false beliefs.

OK. So you don't like me calling Kali Ma "my Goddess"? How about Devi or Shakti? That OK? So..."blasphemous" doesn't work in a Hindu context? Would the word offensive do? Is it not possible to offend the deity and/or the devotee through negligence or maliciousness? Substitute those words I've suggested and see if my diatribe still doesn't pass the test. BTW, While I disagree with your...

UPDATED Thu Sep 4 2008 09:30:57 OK. So you don't like me calling Kali Ma "my Goddess"? I didn't say that. If you want to accept Kali asyou personal deity that's fine. As Richard Dawkins insists, there is nothing wrong with a personal God. Is it not possible to offend the deity and/or the devotee through negligence or maliciousness? Well I'm a nastika Hindu (the athiest school of thought) so I don't...

There are actually very few Westerners who regard 'The Temple of Doom' to be an authentic guide to Indian culture. Most of them are smart enough to know that this is no more than a good action-adventure film. I say this as an Indian who has travelled extensively in Western countries. Besides, there is hardly anything grossly 'offensive' about showing Indians eating snakes and bugs. True, most Indians do not eat those...

There is nothing "racist" about this film. It is just good, old-fashioned adventure Ha! And there was never anything racist about those good old-fashioned adventures, was there?
