Anyone notice how in the scene where Toby is eating the pie and there's banging coming from upstairs because Sweeney is giving Pirelli quite the beat-down - Mrs. Lovett tries to cover it up by banging things on the table, talking over it, etc. Then, when Toby rushes off to go upstairs, she tries to stop him as though she knows what's happening. However, a few minutes later when she goes into the barber shop...

Did I say that I thought he was killed first? NO. I'll try and explain myself better: Mrs. Lovett, feeling rather motherly about Toby, doesn't want him in the middle of what she thinks (from all the banging about upstairs) is a fight between Sweeney and Pirelli. Since Toby goes back downstairs to get his promise of gin, she thinks that Pirelli left in a huff, forgetting about his young assistant. We know that in that short time,...
