well.... after much deliberation: which included looking at the white faced explorer II - (and thanks to you for advice) - this is now very happily on my wrist - and makes a great companion to the Sub ... even my wife agrees :001_smile::
oh - and the YM is def on the list for the future....
Its tritium and phosphorus. The beta particles released by the tritium fly into the phosphorus particles and excite them which is what make the Phosphorus glow.
It may have to do with how much phosphorus is available in the mixture. The tritium may still be "hot" but there might not be enough P to excite.

Hi Glimmer
I guess that you have your answer now. ~12 years is the half life of the beta emission of the actual radioactive component, Tritium, and not the half-life of the "glow".
The beta release of the Tritium causes the phosphorescent paint to glow. So, your Tritium is probably still emitting beta at half what it did 12 years ago...it just isn't enough to excite the phosphors.....
September is historically the time of year that these rumors explode...
This coincides with the traditional October 1 fiscal calendar that most economies used to run on, and commensurate pay/dividend hikes etc..
Since Rolex has never released such information ahead of time, it is unlikely that any AD's or Grey Dealers would actually know such privileged information as a fact....
Also, the rumors can help fuel a binge buying spree of people who are trying to get them before the supposed increase; thereby making for 'better numbers' at fiscal year end.
hi everyone,
I am trying to decide which of these discontinued models I should get and would really appreciate some insights.
the price is comparable here where I find them (GMTII pepsi 2001 USD 5680, and Sea dweller 16600 v series last of the batchs USD 6140) but I can only afford one.
I like the GMT II pepsi alot, and the 2 time zone fits my profession very well, but the sea dweller...
Great watch, even greater price. In the TT models, that white dial with Onyx markers looks absolutely superb!! Congrats and wear it in good health, buddy!! JJ

As I was hiding the Xmas present for my wife ( Leopard Daytona ) I stumbled upon my late mothers 78274 ( A reg ). It has some scratches and marks from what I presume to be from other jewelry ( diamond rings ) on the glass . Do you think that could be polished out or would I need to replace it . I presume the watch could do with a service too . My wife never wore it as she doesn't like Rolex , at least not the "plain"...
