How do you respond to someone who is demeaning you and discrediting you without coming off as just offended? When it really comes down to someone assigning blame to things you didn't do, and relegating lesser duties to you because of said incidents, what is the best strategy? Also comments about lack of feminity? This was a physically demanding job with many digusting aspects that I really ...
I would probably shrug, compare it to changing diapers (i.e. not all stuff that's traditionally "for women" is sweetness and light), and make a comment to the effect that "I just do what's gotta get done."
I'm a social worker. Many social workers happen to be female, however, most supervisors happen to be male and do NOT have a social work background. I tend to try to ignore most of the crap I have to deal with with my male supervisors, especially when they don't have a clue how things REALLY work out there in the world. My tactic often is just to "tell 'em what they want to hear" and then go ...
Do you think more supervisors with a background in social work or a dual background in social work and management would aide the overall goals of social work? Why so few upper management who are in touch with the work that is being done?
That's a complex question..........it really depends. Sometimes their hands are tied. And that is a HUGE reason I left management roles, deciding they are not for me. I do much better when I can work directly with the clients 1:1. It also makes for more of a 9-5 kind of job where I can leave it behind at the end of the day, and set boundaries more readily.
I'm a man but I see blatant anti-woman sexism in my fields of work (math, statistics, computers). I got into a Ph.D. program at Harvard and there was some blatant anti-woman sexism expressed nonverbally by several students and post-docs there and it really turned me off.

I now work in a very female-heavy field, but I had a long-time job that was in print journalism, traditionally a male-dominated field. It's not really anymore (actually, it's a now-dying industry, so it's not really 'dominated' by anybody), but you couldn't have convinced half the people I came into contact with of that. If I had a nickel for every time somebody came in " to talk to the editor...
