Thread: Antifreeze leak? - Crownvic.net

Started 1 month ago by Quin
Hey guys, I just got back from driving my car home from work. Its been quite chilly out lately -20°C and I was driving around and went on one of the faster roads in town. Abut 70 kms. I gave it some gas and I noticed the smell of coolant. My vents started blowing cold air and the car started smoking. I pulled over and opened the hood and there was a ton of smoke. The engine was covered in ...

I'd start by checking the hoses where the coolant runs outside of the engine and the radiator. Was the smell from the smoke strictly coolant smoke? If so the coolant might of hit your exhaust manifold and smoked or steamed up from the contact. How did the engine respond to this happening?

The car was completely fine, It was just me not wanting to risk driving it further than I had too. I checked the rad, the hoses coming to and from the rad, the hoses into the engine and out. It is pretty dark so I cannot check it very thoroughly. But I did look around and saw that the reservoir cap looked like it had a pressure release which pointed in the general direction that it was all in. ...

Does your car have the plastic intake manifold coolant crossover?

Check the heater core hose nipple at the passenger side rear of the intake, Next to cylinder #4. I'll put $1 on it

Sounds like the intake manifold. The original on my car cracked in the same spot you describe.

Okay, just checked the engine, the intake manifold looks like it still has some life in it. It actually blew the hose right off from the back of the manifold, right by the #4 cylinder. I reattached it and it doesn't look like its leaking anywhere else. Its still smoking but its just the left over antifreeze. Thanks for the help guys, I still might look into getting a new intake manifold.

You may have already run the motor but I would pull the COPs on that side and make sure no coolant got into the plug wells. Coolant + COP = fried COP

Could a blockage be for a simple reason? Its running fine now and putting out warm air, is there anything i should check for?

If the "In" hose came off the intake then I would chalk it up to a worn clamp, If it came off the heater core I would think blockage. Since you got it back on we can rule out the nipple separating from the intake. Clamp it... Run it and watch for a few weeks. Keep your foot off the floor until you feel really good about the repair.

Coolant + COP = fried COP Thanks, I probably wouldn't have thought of that, I'll read the codes as well just to be safe. FYI, same line of reasoning, don't drive your car after washing the motor without checking to make sure all...

The hose that blew off from that rear manifold nipple is the outlet to the heater core (or inorder words it's the heater core supply line).
