Thread: Ann Arbor is awesome

Started 3 months, 4 weeks ago by HonorsCentaur
So I visited a friend in Ann Arbor last week and loved the town (a little too liberal but that's ok) and the campus. Chances? Ok so I visited last week, and it was awesome. So I'm adding it to my list. Potential majors: French/Econ dbl mjr Regular Admission cycle AP/IB Taken/Will have taken (Class): AP World History, AP US History, AP English Literature, AP Calculus IB English HL,...

GPA: 3.9 SAT: 2190 I say you have a great shot.

HonorsCentaur replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Does Mich only consider single sitting?

yosup replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Yeah they do. Match. The only negative is you're OOS but you should still get in if you apply early. "Recs: Counselor doesn't like me that much, but the other two should be great." You only need the counselor rec and 1 more from a core subject teacher.

^Really? IB diploma with a 3.92. I think he's in.

Alexandre replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Safe match. You have a very good chance. Make sure to complete the application before November 1.

HonorsCentaur replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Do they offer early action? I'm not gonna apply ED if they have it but it would be nice to know by December 15

Entertainer replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Yea its basically early action. Michigan uses rolling admissions.

Alexandre replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Michigan has an "Early Response" option, which is completely non-minding.

tenisghs replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
^^ If anyone is confused, he meant non- binding . We know it's late over there.

Alexandre replied 3 months, 4 weeks ago
Yes, it was late and I was tired. I meant non-binding.

"Ummm, Alex, I think #6 is clearly Berkeley. And it's not only me who is biased...that's been established over many years by the ~2,000 academics completing the peer assessment poll." Hehe! Well, it so happens that the 4 Cs (Cal, Catech, Chicago and Columbia) all make the strongest case for #6 honors. But schools like Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn etc... aren't far...

^^^Well when you don't have a top nursing program nearby your med school/hospital that grants undergraduate degrees, I guess it wouldn't make much of a difference if you had a med school campus or not. ;-)

"After those 5, you have 12 or so universities of equal quality, although they vary in style and environment." First you said 20. Now you say 12. What will you say next?

I don't think OOS students are the difference, but the lower percentage of in-state students is a mark of Michigan. The law school, for example, admits a lower percentage in-state than the other public top-ranked law schools - it used to be 50% and may still be. That helps the reputation if not the reality of the education. As I said above, the grad schools reputations are the big driver. That kind of ranking is much more important and...

I can tell from my experiences that Ann Arbor is almost immune from the economic troubles that affect most Michigan cities (larger areas such as Detroit and Flint having the most difficulties). I got my apartment unit for a really good rate (early bird special). I don't think you will have too much trouble finding housing. However, I am a graduate student so I am living off-campus where the rents are cheaper and rooms more spacious. As...

Indeed OOS may have higher SAT scores, particularly since the State of Michigan uses, pays for and reports ACT scores...so SAT is under-represented and under-studied (unless a student is targeting some OOS schools.) And I agree Tyler, with your assessment that the GPA phenom of OOS students can indeed be explained by the fact that many of the students admitted will be from exceptionally rigorous private schools. However, I note that if the OOS...

The University opens up opportunities all over the world including some opportunities in Michigan. The economic situation will not be the same by the time you graduate.

"We don't disagree, though I think the "edge" conversation is absolutely silly. Michigan has higher scores because the OOS students raise the average. We know that. Other arguments are, well, silly. Example: sure Michigan has a more diverse alumni base but it's still in Michigan, where job growth is awful, while Texas is in Texas, where job growth is better. Does it matter? Not really." It matters...
