Thread: Amarillo, Texas

Started 5 months, 1 week ago by haux
Hi, all. I moved to Amarillo in October and decided today to head downtown and get some pictures of the city for you. I haven't seen any threads dedicated to Amarillo, so this thread's probably a first. Enjoy. We begin this journey inside my car, where it tells me the outside temperature is nearly 100. Nice. About four of the past six days have been 100 or higher. ...

Nice pictures and welcome to the forum! You're right I don't know if Amarillo has ever had its own thread! Keep the pictures coming!

Rolled thru town one time on a trip to San Diego. Thought it was a nice stay over town for a steak and a beer. Saw the canyon too, it's pretty cool. Hope something's done to the boarded buildings.

That last abandoned building looks like a warehouse of some sort. Interesting stuff. I haven't been to Amarillo since I was about five years old, and I remember the long ride in the car more than anything. Really liking the courthouse and the Santa Fe building.

It's not very far between Amarillo and Denver. LOL. Nice shots.

Amarillo ain't my cup o' tea, but there are definitely some architectural gems there. Thanks for the tour!

I have family that lives in Amarillo. They never take me downtown when I visit. I kind of like the place, though. It's not very urban or cosmopolitan, but I've always still managed to enjoy my visits. The Palo Duro Canyon is beautiful, and worth checking out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palo_Duro_Canyon

Welcome to the forum. I hope to see lots more pictures from you. Man, I really hope they don't tear down the courthouse. That would be such a loss. Quote: Originally Posted by haux There we go. Very impressive. I always assumed Amarillo looked more like Pueblo.

Sorry it took so long for another update. Here's the Cadillac Ranch just west of town. My brother was in town, so we bought some spray paint and headed out there. It's 10 cars in a field off the interstate. My brother gets ready to paint. The first thing he wrote was "buy war bonds." He's so 1940s patriotic. There were a lot of spray cans around. We cleaned up our mess. As we arrived, two women finished up...

Cool. Thanks. Definitely a neat thread. Keep the pics coming! Those signs are hilarious. And the guy's name is "Stan Marsh" - South Park!

Fascinating stuff. Very desolute looking. I like the Acupulco Restaraunt building. Very deco. The Herring Building is quite handsome. Would make a good apartment building with a little TLC. Seems like we are seeing a lot of closed hospitals around the country. Sadly, it is difficult to find any adaptive reuse for a closed hospital building. Did the hospital build a new facility?

ahh yeah, i've seen these before in art books -- cool! stanley marsh is the local millionaire who most famously collaborated with 'the ant farm,' a group of artists, to build the cadillac ranch. i take he is more than a bit eccentric, but definately in a way i like i wish there were more stanley marsh's sponsoring wacky art stuff around the country! some info: "In the 1970s, Marsh collaborated with the art group...

it's unrealistic to think Amarillo, TX, a small city in the middle of nowhere, would have any incentive to become any more built up. I'm going to make a bet, that the high-rises were fueled by oil and cotton wealth for a short boom period, then many of the local tycoons got bought out by big city banks elsewhere and moved?

I'm pretty sure it's the tallest between Fort Worth and Denver. Not Dallas.
