You're all right, Gaudin never could have done this. Hopefully he settles in and the Yankee bats get going, but it certainly looks like those who wanted Gaudin clearly had the right idea. Now you likely lose game 5, blow out the pen and have a 39 year old starter lined up for game 6 on short rest. Any comments now?
blow out the pen? theres a day off tomorrow. they can use aceves/Gaudin. That was the argument for those who didn't want Gaudin starting. You'd blow out the pen.
Gaudin would have been shelled too, and how do you know AJ would have fared any better against them in Yankee stadium? They didn't seem to overwhelmed in our park. They will hit there no matter who is pitching. Burnett has pitched well a few times on 3 days rest in his career.

I take it you didn't watch game 2, or any Burnetts starts at home in the postseason, or for that matter all year?...
This is a duplicate of the LA game. AJ settled down thereafter. Game is not over at all. No need to jump to premature conclusions. I certainly hope he settles in and the Yankees win but him starting poorly is a luxury the Yankees don't have as much tonight as they would in game 6 (Lee vs Pedro and DH). AJ doesn't have as many pitches in his arm tonigth as the LA game though (and he'll be at ...

It's the fact the Yankees are facing a lesser pitcher who they stand a better chance...
Pettitte's career numbers on 3 days rest 14 starts 4-6 record, 4.15 ERA, 1.431 WHIP, 1.82 K/BB ratio His career numbers overall 229-135, 3.91 ERA, 1.361 WHIP, 2.34 K/BB ratio
So in game 2, AJ wasn't fired up in his first WS start of his career when the Yankees were down 0-1 and were looking at 3 straight road games? It isn't as simple as wanting to pitch well or being fired up or not. I'm sure he wasn't nearly as amped as he was tonight with a chance to win the WS on the road. So what was Pettitte's problem in Game 6 of the 2001 WS? I mean, pitching to win a WS following 9-11 for...
Bostonstillsux, actually summed it up perfectly. If you don't think will and grit have anything to do with pitching, you're naive. THIS MIGHT BE THE LAST START OF HIS CAREER, if you don't think that fires a guy up, makes him perform better, you're mistaken.
In a vacuum, AJ on short rest is better than Gaudin at any point. However, when you factor in the DH already being lost, and who the opposing pitcher is, then it's not the right move. If you throw AJ tonight and lose, what have you gained? A 37 year old on 3 days rest for game 6, and that's not letting the Phillies back in the series? and if Lee implodes and you lose because you used a throw away pitcher, what have you...
this argument is in hindsight though. No one was assuming Burnett would do this beforehand. Yea, except for the 90% of the people on these boards. not true at all. All I saw on here was "Gaudin should start" posts, with about 5 dissenters. So, maybe 80% saw this happening. no one flat out said Burnett would implode tonight. That's just al ie. Of course no one said he would implode. But there were...
C'mon, there clearly is a mental side of the game but get real. The announcers are discussing that Andy isn't even sure if he can go - it will be a game day decision. It seemed apparent that Andy really had to struggle to get out of game 3. I'd be a bit worried about him with 4 days rest; with 3 days rest he's a disaster waiting to happen and all the grit and guile in the world will only go so far. AJ showed in game 2...
Is there anyone I trust more than Andy in a big game? You lose a huuuuuge asset. Some of you guys are morons, Andy has pitched in more big playoff games than anyone in baseball. No way I don't want him to not make another start. Me +1. 3 days rest. Stop wearing blinders to the fact that this wouldn't be normal for him.
It works both ways. If you pitch Gaudin on the road against Lee, you are likely conceding the game and if the Yankees score a few runs, there are questions to be answered. Similarly, if Burnett pitching on the road on short rest, allows a few runs (as he already has) then the questions arise as the remainder of the rotation is on short rest. Realistically, the chances of winning one of Game 5 or Game 6 doesn't change much no matter what...
