The shifting definition of "natural" from chemically unaltered hair to "hair that grows from your scalp" has me scratching my chemically unaltered head. (IMG: style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif ) I had no idea that fake hair had become so popular in the black community such that this new definition could even take root. But then I started thinking about the black women in my life and realized ...
All of the people that I'm around have a CFC. I did come to find one person (not one that I would call a friend b/c I don't know her like that, and she has never had a cfc, this is what she says. But she's always hiding it under weaves/braids all the time, and her hair is damaged, or at least could be a lot healthier). And what irks me is that they are all always trying to get me to 1) put in a ...
With the exception of most women in my family the women I come in contact with on a daily basis have CFC's AND fake hair. I'm a bit shocked & disgusted by the proliferation of weaves, wigs, lacefronts etc....
Well seeing how I have convinced all of my close friends and everyone in my immediate family to go to natural, there are like two of my "associates" I wouldnt call them friends who are still holding out. But the majority of my friends are natural.
I couldnt really pick either or , my immediate family , everyone is natural in their sense of the word. It depends on what you define natural . My mother , my sister, my grandmothers, my aunts on my mothers side are all.........well pretty much have silky bouncy, 2-3 type hair. They blow dry it , fla.t ir.on it and dye it. So when I said I was going natural they claim to already be natural *...
LBell, because you added "regular contact" I had to exclude my dad's family in the States. Up here, it's pretty evenly distrubuted between naturals and perms/presses. I have a cousin who wears weaves on a regular basis but otherwise not many unbebeaveables in my entourage. That said as permie from the late 80s to the mid90s, natural was the hair growing out of your head, napps were not even a ...
Wow..so far the results surprised me. I chose that they would all be wearing weave. I grew up in a white area and most of all my friends in high school wore braids since that was the in thing, but they were re.laxed if they didn't wear weave. This is why I used to think that "natural" meant "no weave". Then I moved to a black area and its a tie between re.laxed and weave wearers. The...
Everyone around me wears weaves and CFC daily, and 98.9% does a CFC every month because they don't want the "naps" to show, and one does her CFC every 2 weeks to keep her hair "smooth"
If a marker is "regular contact", I have to say most of the black women I deal with are natural. I noticed this in Seoul as there was a big group of us who spent time together regularly. Most were natural, others had braids and some were relaxed. From the time I've left until now that's been the largest group and the group with which I had regular contact. Now that I'm in NYC, most of the ...

Okay, this confirms what I suspected! (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif ) But now all these other questions are coming up...don't worry, I won't create another poll. If I could I would ask people's age range (under 18, 18-25, 26-33, etc.) to see if there's a generational thing going on. I was one of the first women in my circle of women to go natural, so back then non-naturals were hugely in the majority....

I have to make a totally new post (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mad.gif ) Anyway, in response to nappyme, when I'm on my college campus I rarely (if ever) see tacky brightly colored weaves. When I go to church where most of the people are doing okay and better I rarely see it. people who do wear fake hair do it in a more conservative way, like you said. When I go home, I see all kinds of exposed tracks, rainbows, and unweavability. I...
QUOTE(LBellatrix @ Sep 11 2009, 11:02 AM) I wonder if I'd stayed in Chicago (where there are many more black people and many more opportunities to meet black people), whether the naturals-to-non-naturals ratio would be the same. If I lived in a more static situation, could I look at my circles of people and be able to say, definitively, "More black women are going natural"? The last time I spent any...
QUOTE(watercolorz @ Sep 13 2009, 04:15 AM) Most women I know in Chicago don't use chemicals to straighten their hair. The ones I know that are in the 30+ range wear their hair without chemicals or extensions but they may go between using heat and wearing it natural. The sisters that I know in their teens and 20's here if they are natural they wear extensions unless they have dreads. Ex: my sister 25 hasn't had...
Most of the folks around here have extensions and weaves. I am seeing more natural sisters appearing on campus, but the predominant hair includes pieces, ponies, weaves. I did see my first lace front last week in person. I was like white folks when they see someone with long locs or real natural hair for the first time in terms of asking tons of questions, examining their hair like a specimen, etc (IMG: style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif )...
QUOTE(EvesDilemma @ Sep 13 2009, 09:31 AM) LBell, I have to agree with this new trend of trying to redefine natural as just the hair that comes out of your scalp, although technically still by that definition we are talking about napptural hair, not what you do to it after it gets out of your scalp. I am really starting to wonder if the trend of more women transitioning out of CFC's is sparking an attempt redefine by...
I know quite a few women who are in transition and many naturals. I also see them all the time. Things are definitely changing. I'd say it is about 60% perms to 40% naps. My ears don't work for that permed hair is natural hair bull. This post has been edited by mamaprincess : Today, 03:10 PM
Ok... I made a quick list. I included my immediate family, my close circle of four BFFs, and extended network of friends. Most of the women wear relaxers. A few press exclusively and a few have no problem mixing it up by alternating in and out of weaves/extensions, relaxers, being natural, p.ressing etc. Very few people that I can think of off the top of my head are exclusive wearers of fake sew in/glue in hair or wigs. Although I wore...
