I mean, it comes in a squeeze bottle, is relatively inexpensive, is all low-glycemic sugar, and tastes a hell of a lot better than any gel out there right now. Seems to be stable at warm temperatures, too. True, no caffeine, carnitine, or electrolytes (a minute amount of potassium), but you could get that from some Hammer powder in your water bottle. Has anyone ever considered this? I swigged ...

Why would you want a low-GI gel? Isn't the whole purpose with energy gels that you want something which is easily digestible and gives you a quick carb boost? Aiming for low-GI seems to be quite the opposite of this...

Well I thought that was the whole point of Hammer's HEED - it hardly has any sugar in it for a "sustained energy" as opposed to a spike. I am not super familiar with all of this as I will typically eat just about anything on and off the bike, but thought it might be a viable option. _________________ The devils of past religions have always, at least in part, had animal characteristics, ...
typically i use gels as spikes anyway, that's kind of their point - solids for slower release, 'planned' energy and gels when i'm about to bonk and there isn't time for a clif bar to get to work.
i'd love to find an alternative tho' - i'm really not keen on gels. agave syrup tastes better...

I don't use Hammer products myself, and tend to agree with Fredrik - i want that energy quick!!
You could also mix with brown rice syrup.
The gels (and bloks) from Clif are all made with brown rice syrup, fyi. The bloks are my fav, and now in better packaging!
I agree with Dave here. There is some info in the recipes section for home made gels. I got some info from this climbing site regarding agave and brown rice syrup:

I 2nd the Clif Blocks, they taste good warm or cool and go down easy. As far as Agave Nectar Brendan Brazier uses this as a base in many of his homemade energy gels. Mostly dates, bananas, blended up with Agave Nectar. I recommend buying the book with all the recipes if you are interested(The Thrive Diet) but I might feel like being nice later and gather a few of the recipes to post for the gels. He also has homemade recipes for bars,...
I have recently been making gel from the brendan brazier thrive book. Agave nectar, dates, carob powder, lemon zest lemon juice and salt. Tastes so good. I have used the cliff gels a few times and i LOVE their brownie bars. Dates seem to be a key thing for energy. (the recovery pudding in this book is very tasty too). I was going to ask advice of other foods to eat while biking, perhaps I will raise it in another message though.
ive won a couple of 24hr solo races on just blended raisins, dates or bananas. those organic medjool dates are my recent fav. i ran a 56km ultra marathon with just 300g of dates in the back of my jersey. i make a mix called 'datorade'. its cheap, eco, organic, vegan and no plastic to throw away... or GM maltodextrin like found in most gels today. anyways, you just pit the dates, weigh em to ensure your getting enough carbs and then...
