Thread: Advice for potty training resistant daschunds?

Started 4 years ago by terrimeyers
I have had it! I have 2 daschunds (male 1 1/2 & 3 yrs old) that potty all over my house. One has the kitchen as his "potty place" he pees on the garbage can, laundry baskets, or anything else that is on the floor. The other one has the living room and hall. He pees on the corners of any piece of furniture and EVERY piece of furniture. I don't get it, they seem to be going backwards in ...

For starters, I must ask...are they intact? Males that are not neutered can be marking territory, and such. Behaviors which are testosterone-triggered can sometimes be eliminated or minimalized with neutering. Also, contact a dog behaviorist or trainer and tell them what you are doing to solve the problem. They will be able to customize a training plan for YOUR dogs in YOUR home to fit in YOUR ...

I have a neutered male bichon (rescue) who had this problem, and here's what worked for us: We had to limit his water intake for a week. He was given water 3x per day at the same time each day and then the bowl was removed each time he finished drinking. He was walked within 20 minutes of drinking his water, and the walk was 1/2 hour long to make sure that he had enough time to eliminate. He ...

The 1 1/2 year old it in tact and the older one is fixed. I swear, they have contests to see who can pee in the most spots. I can tell because 1 lifts the leg and the other doesn't.

Give them away! Let me explain. I have had a LH Mini Dachshund for about 6 years never got him REALLY trained. Last year I gave him to my parents, I still see him every day:D. Well my Dad put him on a super strict schedule and well now a year later he is doing great. Well most of the time. He is in tact and he still feels like he has to remind every one that it is his house. Oh ...

You are sooo right. I left the house today, hubby was home so I didn't kennel them. I had to run back inside, (I was gone 10 seconds) and bruiser had already peed on the garbage can! They are so spiteful, it's like having a jealous boyfriend.

Terri In order to have a hope of training them you will need to do a strict boot camp. It will be a lot of work especially with two. Basically, you can not give them the opportunity to commit the error. This may take leashing them to you so that they are with you all the time and then taking them out every 30 minutes. It may be easiest to train one first. I believe you need to get the in ...

I can relate your problem. I have a 3 1/2 yr old male Pug who looooves to mark. He was neutered at a very young age, but that didn't seem to make a bit of difference! I've tried many, many different methods to break him of the habit, to no avail. As stated above, you can't give them the opportunity. That's been the only thing that has worked for me. He's crated when we're not home, he can't leave...

Speaking from more years of experience than I care to admit to, dachshunds can be just about impossible to house train if you aren't 100% committed to sticking with it. If you can kennel them without having them pee in their kennels, that's where you start. Just like you would with a baby puppy, you have to put them on a schedule and stick to it like glue. Take them out of the kennel to the...

My last dachshund bitch was convinced her crate was really an indoor outhouse. She used it as her own personal toilet, and pretty soon the rest of the crew were using it like a covered litter box too. So I gave up, and let them have one crate as a litter box. At least it was all in one place, and easy to clean up. Rondy was born knowing she was the Queen. We called her Tank, and I do believe she was a Marine DI in a previous life. The best we...

Speaking from more years of experience than I care to admit to, dachshunds can be just about impossible to house train if you aren't 100% committed to sticking with it. I have a friend who is really into Daschunds and also does rescue. She said they are a very difficult breed to housebreak. One reason you see ALOT in rescue. I had Pugs 2 sisters never completely housebroken. Would do it in the crate. Both are passed now but that was a...

We had trouble with our female JRT- I don't think she was completely housetrained until she was 6 months old. But we persevered. For those whose dogs eliminate in their crates: we solved THAT problem by keeping a beef bone and (sometimes) a bowl of water in there for her. We hoped she wouldn't want to eliminate that close to them and it worked. Also, having the bone in there helped make the crate a good place to be and reduced her...
