Thread: Adding Original Tivo Drive As Second Drive
Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Eddief66
Ok, I have a Series2 DT and I've just upgraded to a new larger drive. As anyone knows, adding a second drive isn't supposed to be an option in an S2 DT because there's not enough room. However, I'd like to try and add the original drive as a second drive even if I have to use the double-sided tape method. My question is: The original drive already has an image on it so will it work as is with ...
This might help someone else and save them time, so I'm writing up a quick post.
My Series 2 TiVo with Lifetime Service died a slow lingering death. Finally, it was stuck at "Powering Up," and I figured it was the hard drives.
MFSTools failed to backup the drives, saying something about a corrupt header. So, I was left using an old backup from 2003. I know there are images out on the ...
Actually, you could have easily used the backup image on the 500GB drive. The problem is that you probably tried to expand the partitions after restoring the backup and MFSTools choked on it. Had you simply restored the image without expanding it you could have performed the update and then run mfsadd to expand the drive. The older image contained a kernel that had the 137GB limitation. Once ...
Thanks for the tip. I did not realize that. I guess the important point is
realizing that the old kernel had the 137gb limitation. Your method is an
easier way to work around it. Thanks.
Hi folks- I am a longtime Series 2 owner and thinking of upgrading to one of the hi-def models. Would it be possible to replace the stock internal drive (the a drive) of a new Tivo with a 2TB RAID 1? I could get a RAID with an eSATA ouput and connect it to the SATA port of the internal drive mount.
I realize I could always just back up the internal drive and replace it if it dies, but a ...
I'm not a RAID expert, but I'll take a stab at this.
The short answer is: Possible, yes; Practical, no.
In order for the TiVo to use any drive, you need the TiVo software on the internal drive (A drive) and any external (B drive) must be "married" to the internal drive. I have seen some posts on this forum about implementing a RAID as the external drive, with some success. I haven't ...
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
My main interest was in creating a RAID of the A drive. Drive failure has been my only problem with TIVOs (I am on my third TIVO). So having a RAID for an A drive seems like a big advantage, and keeping the drive heat outside of the TIVO with an external RAID seems like another minor benefit. Both should help me extend the life of a new TIVO...
Using an external RAID1 is possible and practical with a TiVoHd, if the additional cost isn't a concern. Prepackaged RAID1 kits are available from weaknees: link . Exceeding 1TiB of usable capacity may be a problem in a RAID setup, due to the issues that robomeister mentioned.
Thank you- I checked the link and watched the video and it does seem like what I am looking for. I noticed in the video that they left the internal drive powered on. And switching STATA cables is a very simple and elegant solution.
Do you know if I can disconnect the power without throwing off something on the TIVO motherboard? It would run cooler without the drive.
There is no need for 4.0, if you have a legitimate purpose.
Standalone Series 2s that used to run 4.01 can run the latest, which I think is 9.3.2c, and can take any rather recent image.
DirecTV TiVos can, and I think need to run at least 6.3, and have some of the 4.01 features in it.
By "label" you mean...? MY name for it? Some other name I have to figure out? I already formatted a complete 500gig drive as a DOS drive yesterday, it's empty except for the virtual machine, because that's where I put it.

I got the bracket kit on Friday and did the upgrade yesterday and it worked perfectly. msfadd cleared and partitioned the old drive just as I hoped and now I have an extra 80gb of storage.
Another update: After a few days, it appears that Tivo just has a bug in it. After queueing up too many MRV shows, you'll start getting Error #86. This will then prevent you from MRVing anything else, or even recording a new show. After the queue shrinks, the error goes away. I seem to be able to queue up more SD shows than HD shows before the problem occurs, so perhaps it's based on amount of space? Something to do with allocating...

I just spoke with a CSR who confirmed that I'm still under no contract with DTV at this point.
I think that's meant to indicate that the stock S2 DT Tivo only has a bracket included that can accommodate a single drive. Other Tivos originally came with brackets for two drives. This includes the original S1 SA Tivos (it had the space but the actual bracket was an optional accessory) and the S1 DTivos. The first S2 SA models had a similar, if not exactly the same, bracket as the S1 DTivos which could hold two drives. The later S2...

Looks like I found the problem. While both are S2, they are different models. My brothers Tivo is a TCD230040 while mine is a TCD649080. Got an image from a TCD230040 and it works fine.
