Thread: A peek inside a Black Box

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Hoople
More useless information from the desk of Hoople! Some may find it interesting as to what is really inside a Black Box HD regulator so here goes. My Thanks go out to Rich (rjsogard) who contacted me and donated the DOA organ to research. The Regulator is an HD part # 74631-06 black box. I don't have the published current specs on this regulator but I believe it is rated at 38 amps. ...

Could only upload 5 pictures so here is another when the regulator starts to kick in!

Page 2? Is it in fact a wye (star) connection or did you merely draw it that way? That's 200mv AC scale? What's the actual AC voltage present?

If there's a common at all, it's a wye. Very interesting writeup.

Well done Hoop, I was actually quite relieved to see the module still using descrete components, and certainly doing so helps alleviate the stress on the pass elements being distributed over a larger surface area of the heat sink surface. But you will also notice that with the simplicity comes the danger of transients being able to damage them as the snubber capacitors shown certainly cannot ...

Very interesting. Brought back memories from college days, learning and lab exercises with SCRs. Thanks for doing this and sharing.

Navy mechanics are called knuckle draggers for a reason. Don't understand what was written, but it made a good read. Thanks Hoop

But your right, I should have measured the AC ripple amplitude and included it. The scales on the...

In a nutshell what Hoop did was verify the construction of the electronics is old reliable tech from the 70's. He found basic passive components like resistors, capacitors and coils individually packaged..."discrete" and individual in their functions. The only new tech "solid state" devices were diodes, transistors (dual diodes) and "gated diodes" SCR silicon controlled rectifiers,...
