Hi,
I just bought my first Cruiser a 1988 FJ62. When I bought it the transmission was out, other than that it seemed like a solid rig. Just a little rust in the rear quarters which I guess is very common.
Well I wound up paying over $4K for the tranny overhaul. I thought that was pretty steep but it was mostly parts. Labor was a flat $1k and the rest were hard parts. Did I get screwed?...
I cant believe you paid $4K for a tranny fix!!! You could have bought a brand new one!! If I had $4K laying around I would have bought a used motor/tranny combo off of craigslist and had a motor swap done... I have a budddy who just bought a Cummins 4BT with the tranny and picked it up for $1200. Installed it for another $800. Before you spend any more money on this cruiser, you should use your ...
No I think you misunderstood the question. I didn't ask if I got the most bang for the buck or if you had 4k what would you do? I was wondering if 4k was a fair price to rebuild it. It has new front sprag, foward drum, direct drum, output shaft, converter and a couple other hard parts that I can't remember.

Well, the tranny shop took you, plain and simple. Unless you insisted 'spare no expense' and demanded the newsest and best of everything, they should have recommended a used/reman. transmission in this case. You can buy an entire FJ62 with a good/rebuilt/H55 transmission for the money you spent on the work. They(the shop) must have an awful source for parts, and they overcharged you , but a lot ...
What a lot of small shops do is price parts from the dealer (full list) and then charge you a mark up from there. In some cases, they don't even use OEM parts, but get them elsewhere, but still charge you the Toyota list prices + margin.
I'd love to see a scan of the bill of sale. There are many Toyota dealer sites out there that you can look up the parts to see what the price would be if ...
A used transmission with around 150,000 mi on it can be bought on mud here and shipped to you for around $500. Then it’s just labor to have a shop install it. Let’s say it took two full 8 hour days for one mechanic at a Toyota Dealer rate of $90. That’s $1,440 plus $500 gives you a total of around $2,000. Yes, it could’ve been done cheaper but let’s move on to your other questions.
Your 4WD...

Did I get screwed? I regret to agree with the rest, yes, you got screwed. No bones about it. Not an opinion, it is a fact. Next time, consult here before you go to a shop. Welcome and congrats on your cruiser. I grew up rebuilding cars and trucks, but I always come to this site with questions. This site has saved me a lot of money. It sucks that the trans cost that much, but you now have a great running trans! Everything on my truck is a PROJECT, not a problem. Speedo - if you take the screws out of the dash cluster and tilt the top towards the steering wheel, you should be able to clip the cable back in. Make...
