Thread: APPLYING arctic silver 5 onto i7 920 and prolimatech megahalem

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by sikanx
what method should i be using to apply the thermal paste? a line on the cpu, letting the heat sink to spread it, or apply the AS5 to the MEGALHALEM, then mount it and spread, or spread by using my finger in a plastic bag onto the cpu?

Unless your cooler is special in some way, I'd follow the AS instructions, which say to do the line thing. Make sure you've got the line going the right way. The website has some good instructions.

The best way I've found is to just apply a decent-sized blob in the center of the heatspreader and let the mounting pressure from the heatsink spread it around. It might take a few tries to get the amount right, but it's the best way to ensure even coverage that I've found.

Here's a guide that recommends a technique for HDTs: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstar t=5

AS5 is fine, unless you're so stupidly anal that you want a couple of degrees cooler at that. I've found the very thin coat across the processor works jsut as well as a line or a blob, neither is better/worse in my experience.

Read the [H] thermal paste shootout. there are 2 main methods, and they tested to whic worked better with each paste. sidenote: shin etsu is not 'new' by any means...

With sufficient clamping force it will not matter a whole lot how you do it, as it should "flow". The proper amount is more important than the method (grain of rice, line, blob, spread etc.). The really "correct" way in my opinion is to put it on any damn way you wish. Then dismount the heatsink after a couple of hours of use and check the 'footprint" for thin, even, total coverage ...

I do agree that 5C is a lot but you are NOT getting 5C using any TIM over AS5 unless you suck at the application procedure.
