A Very Positive Review from InContention.com REVIEW: “Antichrist” (***1/2) Posted by Guy Lodge · 10:01 am · June 23rd, 2009 (Edinburgh International Film Festival) “I am the greatest director in the world,” Lars von Trier declared in an already notorious Cannes press conference following the unveiling of “Antichrist” in May. Unable to resist such shameless baiting, most critics either ...

Cannes #6: A devil's advocate for "Antichrist" By Roger Ebert on May 19, 2009 Lars von Trier's new film will not leave me alone. A day after many members of the audience recoiled at its first Cannes showing, "Antichrist" is brewing a scandal here; I am reminded of the tumult following the 1976 premiere of Oshima's "In the Realm of the Senses" and its castration scene. I said I was looking ...

Critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive on this one, I'll wait and see how this board responds to it. I'm really interested to see it, honestly. I didn't think I'd find myself saying that, but I am. Hope it comes to Chicago. I'll...
Haneke is one of my favorite contemporary directors, so I'm really excited for Das Weisse Band... but what remains to be seen for me is whether he can top Cache and the original Funny Games (both of which are part of my Top Films of All Time list).

I am incapable of fully reacting after a first viewing, but this film was incredibly different from what all the hype was about. I've usually thought of von Trier's cinematic influences being classical - Murnau, Borzage, even John Ford a bit. But even before the final...
I'd rather watch Cronenberg's The Brood over again. He was overcoming a nasty divorce where child custody was first and foremost. At least he didnt try to hide behind any pretenses. von Trier can get his therapy without me endorsing this film. I have, no sympathy for him.
That's one de Oliveira I haven't seen, but it sounds fun He's 100 and has just made another film, "Eccentricities of a Blonde". This must be some kind of record...
Owen Gleiberman has a good perspective in EW today: 'Antichrist': Why Lars von Trier's latest fake outrage was made for, and only for, the Cannes film festival by Owen Gleiberman Categories: Antichrist, Lars von Trier, the Cannes film festival In the world of cinema, there are many precious accolades — an Academy Award, a rating of 100 percent fresh on rottentomatoes.com — but few can match the sexy frisson of that most...
^Well, that oughta shut them up! LOL (PS: Not that I condone "animal damage" -- which I assume is simulated and not used gratuitiously, but metaphorically.)

For virtually no money spent on prints and marketing, IFC is likely making a nice profit on Antichrist, keeping a much higher share of the receipts from the cable companies than they do from theatres, and making people more aware of this venue for the future. Within five years, films like Last Station, An Education, maybe even...
Indeed, I love it when I watch usually a TCM on my big screen, and there are bars atop, bottom and left and right on my screen, effectively reducing the image size by about 50%! Very cheeky!
I don't think its as bad as people are saying it is. It definitely succeeds at creating terror and an uncomfortable atmosphere. It does perhaps go a bit too far (Oh my!) in the last 30 minutes, but if you enjoy screaming and/or being scared or horrified...its' worth seeing. Some elements worked, others didn't, but in the end I appreciate the fact that Lars von Trier took a risk with this project, which is why I gave it the...
