Thread: 9-5 Aero, what is the right antifreeze? Blue or Red?
Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by aerolamb11
Have done a search on this and couldn't find a definitive answer..... As the chilly season approaches, I want to top up the antifreeze in my 9-5 Aero (Jan 2000 registered). I know blue and green antifreeze will mix together but not with red antifreeze and that blue/green uses silicate/phosphate/borate corrosion inhibitors and red uses organic acid corrosion inhibitors hence why they wont ...
Some of the red antifreeze I've used in the past was methanol based and gave off some strange fumes. I think it's banned now! I'm not sure what you have in your car. It may have been changed in the 9 years, but if original, it is the right colour. I would just buy some that is GM compatible. Maybe cheaper from a Vauxhall dealer than a Saab one?
Did you suck up some of the coolant and see if there was any noticeable colour when decanted into a clear glass jar? Why not drain all the old and refill with your choice of a/f colour and distilled water? It's not a difficult job to do, and you could flush the system if you're worried about traces of teh old stuff remaining in the various pipes.. Geez
I bought the proper GM Antifreeze from my local Vauxhall dealer and it is a pinkish colour which matched what was in the header tank already so I assume as my car has a FSSH that this is the correct antifreeze to use.
The best anti-freeze/inhibitor only lasts 5 years 150KKm, if you believe the marketing. If the expansion tank is grubby & the coolant is discoloured then replace it. The head gasket history of 9000 does not show the original coolant inhibitor to be much good, quite the opposite. I don't want to go down that path again. I flushed the old reddish stuff completely out & cleaned the ...
