Sounds like a seriously screwed up pump/cover...someone had no clue.
When the studs grew to 8mm they used a larger pattern, that shared the same dimension between the edge of the stud and pump body...whether it was 6/8 the inside edge of the stud is in the same location.
To use an 8mm pump on a 6mm case is no-problem if the case hasn't been screwed with...use a 6mm cover and life ...

Is there a prescribed method for mating an oil pump which has the spacing for 8mm studs to a case sporting 6mm studs? I understand the 6mm/8mm studs/holes are not concentric so that it's not just a question of tapping for 8mm studs...
The 8mm oil pump I just took off was attached by three 6mm/8mm step studs and one 6mm straight stud; I'm guessing that the reason step studs weren't used on...

Oh yeah. It never looked quite right and the gobs of old silicone protruding from the back of the pump body were always a hint that a bodge job was in the history somewhere. Luckily, with the pump removed, the case side is in good shape with a smooth mating surface and tidy 6mm bores....

Yup...If I'm not mistaken this just so happens to be the hot setup the 36hp landspeed guys are using if you want to go surf for some pictures.
