Thread: 82 GMC Build Lift Questions

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Well Go Ahead!
I figured this would be considered a dumb newbie question so I decided to post it here. I am currently building an 82 K15 shortbox with d60/ 14ff/ 454/ 400/ 205 from the frame up. I'm going to run 44 swampers, but can't figure out how much lift I will need. I have heard that i need from upwards of 22'' to as low as 12". Ten inches is a big dam difference. I have looked all over this site and...

12" and they will fit but rub when turning, 15" is enough to run them with out cutting the fenders but they will hit the fenders when flexing and turning here is a pic with 44-19.5-16.5 boggers on a 1976 with 15" of lift

I agree with the 15" required for 44" tires, no cutting and no rubbing on flat ground.

Thanks for replying guys. GoFast, is the truck pictured yours? Everyone says that a tall lift is a rough ride, but what constitutes a rough ride? Is it like ridin in a one ton pickup or even worse?

Well Go Ahead! replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
Come on, no one else has any pics?

Tall lift springs provide lift, not comfort. They have so much arch in them that they don't flex at all. Thusly, the ride will be horrendous. Try less lift and cut the fenders. Trucks that tall aren't useful for much anyway...

That truck is my buddys, it had 12" springs and 3" drop hangers and shackles, it didnt ride horrible because the longer shackles helped alot. I have 12" springs on my 83 crew cab and it doesnt ride too bad but it is heavy as hell. They ride like a 1 ton truck and dont flex very well.

Thanks again for the help.

Well it's already been answered but my dad had 40's and 10" of lift. here's mine with just 9" lift and 39's. no cutting. Like they said probably 15" with no cutting. of course that truck looks nothing like that now.

Awesome. Thanks!

I plan on building new spring hangers for the front, and dropping the shackle hanger under the frame and getting a little longer shackle. If I do all this I should net about 5 inches and then only have to put a 10 or 12" springs. I also plan on having bumpers and winches front and back so that should give a little smoother ride.

According to the Assjack on Ebay, they are 23" lift springs. And those are 44 inch TSLs

As its already decided ill just back up that 15 is about right for no cutting. Ill still testify that as much as everyone wines about how their truck rides mine rides much better with my 12 inch lift springs than it ever did with the bagged out concave stock springs it came with. Build or buy new front shackles. big lift springs will break the measley little 7/16 stock bolts and flex badly. If you order superlift springs you can opt not to run...

If you are worried about having a tall lift (12") and a crappy ride just run about 5-6psi in the tires and it will make it ride like a caddy.
