Thread: 5 Spot and big forks

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by DGC
Hey all, Been awhile since I have been around here, but I have been popping in for a look from time to time. I have been seeing some of you running 160mm forks. Fox 36, RS Lyrik, Marza-goochie 55 etc... I am looking for some feedback on anyone running forks with the axle to crown length of 545mm +/- a few mm's, on a current 09/10 DW Spot. Wondering what you like and dislike about that much ...

Just put a Lyric on and am stoked. The only negative, and a minor one at that is the weight. Do yourself a favor though and lose that ***** ass air shock out back, it's a Turner for Fock's sake

I'm running a Push'd '08 Fox 36 Talas. I have no idea what the a-to-c length is. I run it fully extended at 160mm for all but extended climbs when I'll reduce travel to 130mm. I've never dropped it to 110mm. The only drawback I experience is when I start to mash the pedals on steep technical climbs and the steering gets slightly sloppy, but the benefit of the additional travel and stability on ...

I've got a Talas 36 on my '09 Spot. 130mm for climbs and flowy up/down/. 160mm for the steep descents. Negatives: 160mm mode slacks the rig out substantially, and IME more attention has to be focused on keeping the front end weighted during high speed cornering on flatter terrain (where I would normally use the 130mm setting). The bike also climbs much better with the fork set at 130mm vs. ...

I would be interested in trying the clutch as well. Not much feedback on it thus far. Love to hear a full review once you get more time on it.

LeeLikesBikes has a writeup on the Clutch: http://www.leelikesbikes.com/new-tir...clutch-23.h tml Back on topic... DGC, you say it actually climbs faster/better with the Lyrik @ 160mm? That seems so counterintuitive - I wonder why that is?

CrashTheDOG replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
Seeing as how I started with the 160mm Talas it's hard for me to compare to a Spot equipped with a 150mm fork. I've never noticed or considered an adverse effect from the higher BB. If anything I'd say that as chunky as our trails are it's another benefit. As far as the bike climbing faster that's a little confusing to me as well. Not sure why the additional 10mm would make it faster. Have you ...

Have Lyriks on mine. Second ride in today and was doing some steep climbs and realised at no point did I feel the need to wind them down from 160mm, front end never wandered or started to lift at all. All good so far!

Demo'd it with a RP3 which was nice. But I'm a coil man at heart, so much prefer it.

Very interesting. I just went from a Talas 32 150 to a Lyric 2step and found it a better climber with the bigger fork but was thinking that the extra weight and stiffness up front helped with the climbs. I'm pretty confused as to why it would climb better slacked out. I did use it at 115 too on the Lyric and it felt really good there as well, it didn't stick in like the Talas would on little rocks. I guess a big fork just works well...

Hey Dave! Sweet bike! I've found earlier this year on my 3 year old DWLinker having the exact same geometry as the 5-Spot, and now with Lyrik coil for over 6 months, that bumping the seat rearward about an inch from post center and going to an inch shorter stem gives me the familiar climbing position over the pedals I was used to for many years with my old horst link with 73 degree seat tube angle. The host link would squat a degree or so...
