Thread: 560 Hardtop installation

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by BOB_560SL
OK Guys, here's a "Hard" one, no pun intended, fought like the devil to get this hardtop off last spring when I bought this car. The lever that holds the secondary locking pin latch had gotten out of adjustment, had to go in through the trunk, rear panel removed to shove a long screwdriver in there to release the pin, finally got that thing off and set her aside. The really strange part is the front. I don't see how the pin could pull the frame up. The didtance of travel when rotated is short and fixed and something would have to be holding the top away to pull frame up instead of top down. You might want to compair pin measurements between both toops.. Has any weather stripping been replaced? I thought all tops were the same, but maybe that top is not ...

I have no problems with bad puns. Since I've not had the hardtop on mine since buying, I'm probably a poor source of knowledge. Assuming you're sure this wasn't like this before, I can think of only two things which could cause a similar issue. 1st would be the rear pin pulling the top down too far. 2nd would be the two side "bolts" behind the doors not being pulled in before ...

Thanks guys, the front pins were the last to be tightened, the rear latch does not over tighten, it's just right, the center latches, behind the seats when tightened, leave about a 1/16 inch gap between the top and body, I believe this could be the problem area as I replaced the grommets with a different material but no thicker than the original, and it should not have caused the top to pull that...
