Thread: 300TDT Differing Diffs?

Started 4 months, 1 week ago by seeingstars
Hello all - My '88 Euro spec 6cyl turbo wagon has a tell tale whine from the differential at highway speeds. I checked the part number on it - R124 351 2508. Does anyone know if diffs from other wagons (gas powered) would fit, or am I stuck trying to find a diesel one?

The part number you gave was for the rear cover. Crawl under there again and see if you can get the final drive ratio #, it's stamped into the casing so you'd want to get some brake cleaner and a wire brush to dig through any grease. I have a good differential out of an 87 300D with 120k miles with no whines or clacks if you're interested. I would only need a ratio to compare to the one I have ...

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'll look for that ratio number and get back to you!

Make that lower *passenger* side corner.

I've got a 2.87 ratio diff for W124 that's taking up space in the shop. I purchased to use in my 87 300E but went in another direction (5 spd swap). Anyway, its here gathering dust, would love to see it leave. $45 delivered in the 48USA, $40 plus actual shipping anywhere else, duties or Customs fees would be your responsibility.

will the 300E diff fit in w126 1982 280SE

hanno2s@verizon.net replied 3 months, 3 weeks ago
I doubt it, but you would need to do homework/search to find out.

Thank you

The OP's diff should be a 2:65 ratio, so any diesel 124 should be a suitable donor.

Zetgeist, Thanks for the information, I am new to this site. I am from Trinidad, I have a 1982 W126 280 SE, recently paint over, I want to restore this vehicle. I will need all the interior parts and a complete diff with hubs and axles and other parts. The engine and transmission was completely built over.
