Thread: .22 Lr survival ammo for Ruger MKIII & Henry M7 USAF survival Rifle
Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by alfred10
I decided to go with the Henry M7 USAF rifle since it will be accuret and reliable enough. I prob. wouldnt carry anything much heavier or larger in my pack. I am looking for the following.
-Can I fire .22 short in a Ruger MKIII pistol and a henry survival rifle?
-What round and type feeds best in a MKIII
-What round feeds best in a M7 rifle?
-What type of round lead, copper,...
If it were ME:
I'd want the hottest rounds I could find for use in this particular application.
Meaning: If I'm going to depend upon this little rifle to feed me while I'm out hiking/bushwacking, I want a cartridge that gives me just "that much more" of an edge.
But as far as what will work the best in YOUR firearms... You're going to have to test that out yourself.
All ...

All firearms are different. What Joe-Bob's M7 likes and what your M7 likes may very well be two different animals. Same with the Ruger....

.22s are often very ammo selective when it comes to what they shoot best and two identical models may shoot two different loads best.
The bottom line is you have to go out and test the ammo.
Personally I would:
A. Purchase a dozen or so of the more widely available brands.
B. Determine through testing which ammo provides the highest acceptable rate of ...

I think the 38 grain hollow point (plated) Mini Mag is the gold standard for rimfire ammo. Lead bullets, CCI included, tend to have too much lube (wax) on the noses and will cause jams in my Mark II by clogging up the front of the mags and the feed ramp. I shoot a lot of CCI Blazer and Standard Velocity, but the Mini Mags keep my guns cleaner. CCI Blazer would be your high velocity lead solid. (500 round bulk) Winchester Wildcat is another....
Do they make a small water proof LIGHT WEIGHT ammo carrier for .22 rounds? I want to carry 500 rounds in my pack. I suppose I could dump 500 in a glad lock...

I.M.O.: After over 20 years of shooting I find the CCI mini mag in solid and HP are the .22 most reliable and the best rounds money can buy. __________________ Left wingers run around in circles, scream like banshees, in a counter-clockwise direction. Buy different ammo and test each weapon with it as far as accuracy and reliability.
