As long as he is able to communicate with you in other ways, just keep talking to him and he'll catch up, and then he won't ever stop!
thanks girls thats made me feel a bit better i never thought of the fact that animal sounds could count as words, that would bring our count to about 20 so i will wait a little longer and see how he goes.

If you are still concerned get his hearing checked. Thats probably the most common reason for kids having few words.

hey my 3 year old doesnt speak. she can say mum and more recently what sounds like no, but other than that we use makaton sign language. its not just for deaf kids (my dd is a hearing child) and its the best thing we ever learnt. its not hard either will help eliviate the frustration of having limited communication
