How did you experience that day?

I remember taking the newspaper and covering it with plastic wrap to preserve it from wear and tear, knowing it would automatically be a minor historical artifact.

The announcer, one Schabowsky, had received a memo from the party bosses that they intended to allow free travel. But when is office tried to reach them to ask for any details - what kind of permits they ...
What an astonishing year that was!
I used to hang with wargamers and such who lived in this cold war thought bubble. There was this whole end-times scenario worked out involving Soviet tanks rolling into Germany and nukes flying. I had long already started to roll my eyes at this stuff; 1989 just totally tore apart that paradigm. Seeing how the old wargamers took it was kind of sad and funny....
I was only seven years old, so all I remember is watching Live TV of people climbing the wall, being happy and making noise. But somehow I understood that this was a moving moment.
@Jürgen: Well,TV announcer? He was a member of the polituro, wasn't he?
Within the last year or so, I was talking with a co-worker about PC games. He told me he just picked up a copy of World In Conflict .
"It's cool," he said. "There's a piece of the Berlin Wall that came with the game."
I allowed it was pretty cool. But later on that night, I started to wonder how in the hell do you authenticate a chunk of masonry?
Then I started giggling, ...
I missed the night, due to me going to bed early. I learned next morning, was very happy, and then experienced a weekend during which a city build for about 2 million people was apparently visited by 10 millions all at once. We had a con that weekend, and public transportation was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I ended up with an 5 note I wish I could exchange for $, but the local currency exchange at the airport (none of the local banks will touch it) charges so much in transaction fees I'd barely have bus fare home aftwards.
