I went to the dealer and still could not duplicate. I even drove around with a tech in the car and could not get it to do anything. I think my car is shy, it doesn't want to perform in front of people.

Nope, the steering has never given an idication of failure--other then the front end noise.

By reading other threads from other VW forums, this may not be a TDI specific problem, but related to the Jetta itself, one other clue is that the noise goes away when I press the clutch. Yes, this noise is related when the 1st or 2nd gear are engaged, but as soon as the clutch is disengaged the noise goes away... on other threads they say the transmission oil can make a difference...

Sounds like a common thread is the 6-speed manual transmission. My wife's DSG just turned 10k miles and doesn't make this sound.

I have the exact same sound on my 04 TDI GLS Jetta. It is still under warranty as well. I am hoping to address this at my next dealer service. My other car (Mini) has a noise from the electric power steering during low speed (parking lot) tight turns. It is common on most Minis and the factory says is normal. Our JSW TDI has no noticeable noise under similar parking lot tight turns.
